👻🎃 5 HALLOWEEN HAZARDS FOR DOGS 🐾

Halloween can be full of fun for us, but for our dogs, it can be a little… spooky! 👀 From strange decorations to a house full of visitors, there’s plenty that can catch them off guard.

Here are 5 things to watch out for this Halloween 🕸️👇

🍫 1. Chocolate & dropped sweets
Chocolate and sweets containing xylitol are dangerous for dogs. Keep treat bowls and trick-or-treat bags out of reach, and be careful of anything dropped on the floor!

🎭 2. Costumes & dress-up
Not every dog enjoys dressing up. Costumes can restrict movement, affect vision or cause stress. If your dog looks uncomfortable, let them go without one!

🕯️ 3. Decorations & candles
Fake cobwebs, dangling decorations, glow sticks and electrical cables can be tempting to chew or swallow. Keep them safely out of paw's reach, and never leave lit candles unattended around pets.

🚪 4. Visitors & open doors
Repeated doorbells, strangers in costumes and doors opening all evening can be overwhelming. Give your dog a quiet, secure space to retreat to, and make sure they can't slip outside unnoticed.

🎆 5. Fireworks & spooky noises
Halloween can bring unexpected bangs and frightening noises. Keep windows and curtains closed where appropriate, provide a safe hiding place and let your dog settle wherever they feel most comfortable. Never force them to face something that scares them.

🧡 Remember: Your dog doesn't have to join in with every Halloween activity. Sometimes the kindest treat is a peaceful evening, a cosy bed and a little extra reassurance. 🐶🍂

If your dog eats something potentially toxic, contact your vet promptly rather than waiting for symptoms. Don't try to make them vomit unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to.

🐾💦 FROM ASSESSMENT TO HYDRO: WHAT HAPPENS FIRST? 🐶

Ever wondered what happens when your dog first comes to Four Wet Paws? It's so much more than jumping straight into the water! 👀💙

Every dog is an individual, so we start by getting to know them, understanding their needs and working out how we can help.

Here's a little look at what to expect! 👇

🐕 1. GETTING TO KNOW YOUR DOG
We start with an assessment, looking at your dog's history, current condition, movement and individual needs. We'll chat about any veterinary recommendations and what you'd like to achieve from hydrotherapy.

📏 2. MEASUREMENTS & ASSESSMENT
We'll take relevant measurements, such as limb and waist measurements, alongside assessing posture and movement. This helps us establish a baseline to monitor changes and progress over time.

🎯 3. SETTING GOALS
Whether we're supporting rehabilitation, mobility, muscle strength or fitness, we'll discuss realistic goals and tailor the plan to your dog.

💙 4. BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Not every dog arrives ready to dive in! We allow time for them to explore, get comfortable with their surroundings and acclimatise at their own pace. We never expect every dog to approach hydrotherapy in the same way.

💦 5. CHOOSING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT
Depending on your dog's needs and goals, their session may involve our hydrotherapy pool, underwater treadmill or a combination of the two. Each offers different ways to work on controlled movement and exercise.

👀 6. MONITORING EVERY STEP
We're watching how your dog moves, responds and copes throughout the session. We can adapt the activity, intensity and duration depending on what they need on the day.

✨ And that's the important bit! Hydrotherapy isn't a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your dog's plan should be individual, purposeful and responsive to their progress.

🧠🐾 ENRICHMENT ISN'T JUST TOYS! 💙

Did you know enrichment can be especially valuable for dogs who can't exercise as much as they're used to? 👀

Whether your dog is recovering from surgery, managing an injury or following a restricted exercise plan, keeping their brain busy can be just as important as looking after their body. 🐶

And no, enrichment doesn't have to mean buying loads of new toys!

🐽 SNIFFING – Hide treats around a room or try a snuffle mat to encourage your dog to use their nose.

👅 LICKING – Lick mats can provide a calming activity. Try spreading an appropriate dog-safe food across the surface.

🦴 CHEWING – Suitable chews give dogs an outlet for natural chewing behaviours. Always choose something appropriate for your dog's size and chewing style, and supervise them.

🧩 FOOD PUZZLES – Turn mealtimes into a little challenge instead of simply putting food in a bowl.

👃 SCENT WORK – Let your dog search for a particular toy or a hidden treat. You can make it as easy or difficult as their abilities allow.

💡 Why does it matter?

Enrichment encourages natural behaviours, provides mental stimulation and can help make quieter days more interesting. It's particularly useful when long walks, running or rough play aren't currently appropriate.

Just remember: enrichment needs to suit your individual dog. For dogs on restricted exercise, follow your vet's or rehabilitation team's advice, and choose activities that won't encourage unwanted jumping, twisting or overexertion.

🌧️🐾 WET WEATHER, HAPPY DOGS! 🍂

Rainy walks, muddy paws and dogs who somehow find the ONE puddle deep enough to swim in… welcome to autumn! 😂💦

As the weather gets colder and wetter, a few little changes can help keep our dogs comfortable and moving well.

🐾 Shorter walks can be absolutely fine. If it's cold, wet or particularly miserable, consider splitting walks into shorter outings rather than forcing one long walk.

🧥 Get them dried off properly. Pay attention to their belly, legs, paws and between their toes. A cosy dry coat can be a real help after soggy adventures!

🐕 Keep those paws clean. Mud and grit can irritate paws, so give them a check and a gentle clean after walks.

💪 Keep activity consistent. Try not to go from barely walking all week to a huge weekend adventure. Sudden increases in exercise can be difficult for your dog's body to manage.

🩺 Have a dog recovering from injury or surgery? Their exercise may need adjusting as the seasons change, but don't simply stop their usual activity altogether. Follow your vet and rehabilitation team's advice on suitable exercise, rest and any changes to their plan.

💙 And remember, mental enrichment counts too! Sniffing games, food puzzles and gentle training can help keep busy brains entertained when the weather is truly awful.

The aim isn't to avoid the rain completely — it's to keep our dogs comfortable, active and happy in a way that suits them. 🐶🍁

💦🐾 HYDROTHERAPY DOS & DON'TS! 🐶

Want to get the most out of your dog's hydrotherapy journey? It's not just what happens in the pool or on the treadmill that matters! 👀

Here's your little reminder for supporting your dog between sessions. 💙

✅ DO follow your therapist's advice. Your dog's programme is tailored to their individual needs, so stick to the guidance you're given.

❌ DON'T suddenly increase exercise. Longer walks or extra repetitions aren't always better. Build activity gradually, as advised.

✅ DO tell us about any changes. Let your therapist know about changes in movement, behaviour, energy levels or anything that seems unusual since your last session.

❌ DON'T assume more is better. Pushing harder doesn't automatically mean faster progress. The right exercise, at the right intensity, is what matters.

✅ DO allow time for recovery. Rest is an important part of rehabilitation. Your dog needs time to recover and adapt to the work they've done.

💡 Remember: Hydrotherapy works best as part of an individualised plan, alongside any veterinary treatment and home exercise advice your dog needs.
