What we get up to on a quieter day…

Blueberry and I went for a lovely walk down in Houghton today ☀️

Unfortunately the coffee shop at the Mill was closed, so we made the most of it and admired the paddle boarders with their beagles onboard, met a very sweet 5-month old Great Dane and then explored the cow fields 🐄

Blueberry putting in the work during his hydrotherapy session today 💙

Alongside laser therapy, these sessions help us manage his hip dysplasia and keep him as comfortable and mobile as possible.

As a trainer, one thing I always consider when discussing behavioural concerns is whether pain or physical discomfort could be playing a role.

During my initial assessments, I'll often ask whether a behaviour is new, has changed recently, or seems out of character. These details can be incredibly important, as changes in behaviour are often one of the first signs that something isn't quite right.

When Blueberry is having a flare-up, I notice changes such as:
➡️ More barking at noises outside the home
➡️ Less tolerance of unfamiliar people giving him attention
➡️ Becoming more clingy
➡️ Subtle changes in his movement and posture

These behaviours don't mean he's being difficult, they give me information about how he's feeling.

Behaviour is communication, and sometimes it's our dog's way of telling us they're uncomfortable. That's why looking at the whole dog, not just the behaviour itself, is such an important part of the assessment process

Meet Ben, Billy and Sophia 🐾

We’re working on different areas with each dog

Confidence building with Sophia after she was attacked a few weeks ago by two off-lead dogs, it’s completely thrown her confidence so lots of positive reinforcement and relationship building

Billy gets over excited when leaving the house for a walk and also when he sees other dogs, so we went over thresholds, passive observation, counter conditioning and lead handling skills

Ben… he’s a 13 year old Cavy and just here for the snacks 🤍

Recall training isn’t as simple as just coming back when called…

With sensitive dogs like Marlee the Beagle, who is only 2-months in his new home, is working through reactivity and is sensitive to touch pressure, we first build engagement, safety and trust.

✔️ Longline for management

The goal? Building a solid relationship so he wants to come back

Meet Joop 🐾

I’ve had the pleasure of taking this handsome boy on adventure walks over the bank holiday weekend, ensuring we were out nice and early to beat the heat ☀️

Out for 8am this morning to explore a local woodlands so it was nice and shady 🌳

🌡️ With temperatures forecast to reach around 33°C tomorrow, please remember that many dogs are at significant risk of heatstroke - even on shorter walks

When temperatures get this high, it’s often safest to skip the walk entirely and focus on calm indoor enrichment instead

Try:
🐶 scatter feeding/snuffle mats
🧊 frozen LickiMats or stuffed Kongs
👃 scent games around the house
🧩 puzzle toys
🦴 chewing activities
🎓 short training sessions
❄️ paddling pools/shaded garden time
🧺 “find it” games with treats or toys

Mental enrichment can be just as tiring and fulfilling, without the heat risk.

Please also remember:
☀️ pavements can burn paws
💧 always provide fresh water
🌳 use fans/shade/cooling mats where needed
🚗 never leave dogs in cars, even briefly

Every dog is different, and factors such as breed, age, coat type, health, and humidity all play a role in heat tolerance

Stay safe and keep those pups cool over the next few days 🐾
