Motherhood as an octopus is a story of self sacrifice. Once her eggs are laid, she will tenderly care for them. Constantly flushing after over them, and protecting them until she eventually starves to death.

Today we honor these incredible and intelligent beings. Capable of complex problem solving, tool use and learning. These animals demonstrate similar levels of cognitive ability similar to that of mammals, they deserve all our respect as a sentient being.

Researchers have uncovered a tiny shark—small enough to hold in one hand—that glows in the dark.

In the deep Gulf of Mexico, a new shark species was identified, using a rare hunting trick: it emits light.
Called the American pocket shark, this little predator (about 5½ inches long) releases a bioluminescent fluid from pouches near its front fins, luring prey toward it with the glow.

Although first collected in 2010 during a mission to study s***m whale diet, it was only recently confirmed as a separate species. Its classification is based on its smaller size, fewer vertebrae, and a dense field of light-producing photophores compared to its Pacific relative.
This is only the second pocket shark ever recorded—the first one was discovered off Chile in 1979. Despite its glowing secret, this shark doesn’t threaten humans and is exceedingly rare.

Its discovery reminds scientists how much of deep-sea life remains unknown. As researchers from Tulane University and NOAA note, identifying a new species from just one specimen underscores the ocean’s hidden diversity.
