Before and after - Head Wound Hector is a hooligan!

He’s a big strong boy, and really should be out and about making lots of hedgehog babies, but instead he’s stuck in the hogspital with a strimmer wound across the top of his head.

It will take a while before he can go back to the wild, but I have no doubt hell@make a full recovery.

Another successful release tonight 🙌🏻

Back where you belong (not so) little Abbie 🥰

Caught in a net, but luckily no injuries - did you know a wound can emerge up to 7 days after being freed from entanglement?

If you find a hog caught in a football, tennis or garden net, please don’t cut it free and send it off, it needs to be observed, just in case…

Strimmer? Or robot lawnmower?

It’s not the person who’s tidying their lawn edges, it’s the person clearing overgrown brambles and nettles, it’s the council worker, it’s the homeowner who runs their robot overnight….

I’m not expecting you to use your hands to check for wildlife before you tackle that nightmare corner and I’m certainly not suggesting the council should spend double the time cutting back the verges, BUT!

I am asking you to start at the top and when it’s safer, use a tool to pull the weeds back and look 👀 before you cut…

Top down is safest!

We won’t know what caught this otherwise strong and healthy hedgie, but I do know I’ve got ONE space in the hogspital now…

Let’s not make it another victim of a gardening accident, hey?

We lost two hoggies last night 😢

Steve couldn’t cope with his parasites and poor little Margot succumbed to a number of things.

Given that her shoulder bone was exposed by her strimmer injury, she had a heavy worm burden, she was on a cocktail of meds and the stress must have been immense.

I’ll always fight for them though, even if they only have a small chance 🫶🏻

Just back from speaking about hedgehogs to the children at Co-op Childcare in Carterton and what do I find? A delivery of essential cleaning items and a tin of the good stuff!

Thank you for having me Chloe, the children were all very well behaved and polite 😊

Please see my previous post about Margot for a full explanation! But for now, I’m afraid I can’t take any more hogs.

Thank you for understanding 🙏🏻

🐛 Margot the magotty strimmer hog!

I honestly thought we’d lose her during the first night. Her wound is so massive that her shoulder bone is showing and she’s still got a maggot problem - but now very minor. With the right meds she’s got a better chance of survival.

A visit to in Carterton confirmed my thoughts that she’s a gosh-darn fighter - and so am I, so we’re going for it!

There will be daily injections, daily wound care and weekly additional injections while we wait to see if the wound granulated and re-covers her tiny body.

After that, we have the question of whether her quills and only real defence will grow back… But that’s a problem for another month!

Because of the extent of Margot’s nursing needs, until I release Catherine or Stevo, I’ll be closing the doors. I can’t give any more time at the moment.

I’m sorry, but I have to take care of the hogs in my care and can’t risk that by overloading.

Thank you for understanding 🙏🏻

FKN STRIMMERS!! Only 319g and you can see that this wound is massive compared to his body size 😢

I’ve done what I can to relieve his pain and remove the maggots, but he doesn’t look good, bless him.

We need all the luck we can get right now for this poor boy 🙏🏻

👋 Welcome to Steve! Lethargic and not moved for a night and the morning, despite having been seen active the night before…

Steve had a very heavy flea burden which is often indicative of something else going on.

After a medicated bath (or two!) I left him tucked up in some fleece and on a heat pad while I spent a lovely few hours on my allotment.

Upon my return Steve had eaten all his recovery mousse and left me a juicy sample 💩

Low and behold - roundworm eggs…

Treatment has begun and we’ll just keep our fingers crossed for a while 🤞

Mary is free 🙌🏻

Luckily her release garden had a conveniently placed Ring camera and caught her first tentative steps outside.

I think she looks happy to be smelling proper smells again - what do you think?!
