Well that’s all folks! At least for now at any rate. A bad hip has finally forced me to admit that I can no longer give the dogs the kind of walks that they deserve.

What a fantastic almost 10 years it has been. It started off with one or two friends asking me if I would take their dogs with my Maggie on my trips to The Lakes. I agreed, thinking that it may at least pay for my petrol. Without any advertising, within a year or so I was regularly taking 5-6 dogs with me up on the fells, 5 days a week. I don’t think anyone could have a better job.

We survived COVID, prostate cancer, but this hip has finally got me.

Due to the cancer treatment and the beginning of my hip problems, the high fells of The Lakes became out of reach. My very best memories were of days spent on the likes of Great Gable, the Coledale and Newlands rounds, Haweswater area, the quieter areas of the Northern Fells, Carrock, High Pike and the rest. In fact, all the fells of what could be described as the Central and Northern Fells. More recently I was reduced to 2 days a week, but still loved the likes of Geltsdale, Gelt Woods, Allonby Beach and other lovely places.

If forced to choose a favourite I would have to say Blencathra. What a fantastic fell. If you are wondering why then go out and have a look.

Of course the stars of the show have been the dogs. What an amazing bunch I have had the pleasure of spending quality time with. I’m not going to pick out favourites, my goodness it would start a riot. Just suffice to say that I have loved them all and it has been an absolute honour and pleasure to have got to know them.

This sounds awfully like a goodbye, but who knows. With the waiting lists being the way they are, it will be the best part of a year before, if everything goes well, that I would be back out walking again. But then … well let’s wait and see.

To my clients, thank you for letting me walk your dogs. To the many hundreds that follow this page, I hope you have enjoyed the pictures. Most importantly, to the dogs, make sure you get your owners off the sofa and get plenty of walking in!

A wet, cold and very windy day at Allonby for Maggie, Murphy, Daphne, Baloo and Ernie. As I’ve said before, I find the wet sand at low tide fairly comfortable to walk on. So off we went. It really was wild, didn’t see a soul all day. Dogs loved it but I think even they were pleased to get back into the shelter of the van at the end.

The tides offered another chance for the guys to have a run on Allonby beach. An opportunity not to be missed for Maggie, Alby, Rufus, Baloo, Eric, Benny and Murphy. They are so familiar with this area that they run and explore even more than they used to. They all loved it.

A lovely walk up the River Eden today for Maggie, Murphy, Baloo and Ernie. Hardly anyone out and about which always strikes me as strange as there is so much room for the dogs to run. Not that my crowd were complaining.

On a beautiful sunny winters day, where better for Maggie, Alby, Rufus, Baloo, Ernie, Benny and Murphy to head than Talkin Fell. I was ably assisted by granddaughter Evie. The north slope of the fell was frozen solid, the sun had melted much of the snow and ice on the southern slopes. A great run around for them all again.

There was just Murphy and Baloo out with Maggie today, but that didn’t spoil the fun. We had a lovely relaxed walk round Rickerby Park, the Cricket Club, over and up through the Swifts and round Bitts Park and the Sheepmount. Met loads of other dogs but ours, as usual, were on best behaviour.

Lovely to get out to Allonby again. Maggie was joined by Alby, Rufus, Baloo, Eric, Ernie, Benny and Murphy. An ideal day for a walk, fresh, not cold, tide right out and even though we could see heavy rain clouds all around us, we stayed dry. I would love to know how many miles some of these dogs cover at Allonby, they absolutely love it.

On such a wet and windy day Gelt Woods looked like a good option. Maggie was joined by Murphy, Baloo and Ernie. Amazing how peaceful it was down by the river, all the better for being able to hear the wind tearing through the trees higher up. A lovely walk as always.

No Maggie today, but of an upset tummy, probably something she has eaten but could be a bug so best to leave her at home.

So it was Daphne, Alby, Rufus, Baloo, Ernie, Benny and Murphy that set off in the mist up Talkin Fell. As expected, the mist blew away before we reached the top. We had a few showers but it was a lovely winters day, there is something about the quality of the light at this time of year. Quite a few people out and about and we all enjoyed another wonderful day on the fells.

A lovely split walk today for Maggie, Daphne, Murphy, Baloo and Eric. We spent most of the morning in Kingmoor woods having a great run around with each other and several other dogs. They all loved it. Then we went down to the River Petteril where most of them went in for a swim, washing the worst of the mud off. I always enjoy this walk.

We were intending to head off to Allonby today, however, I caught a weather forecast this morning where they were reporting 70 mph winds on the Cumbrian coast. We decided to give that a miss.

Instead Maggie, Murphy, Alby, Rufus and Eric went to Gelt Woods. It was very wet, but once into the walk we were sheltered from the worst of the wind and were able to enjoy a lovely walk. Very muddy dogs I’m afraid.
