🌡️💊Summer Medication Reminder 🌡️💊

With the warmer weather and holiday season upon us, it's worth taking a few moments to check the following
📋Are you keeping your medications at the correct temperature? Medications have a safe range of temperatures that they can be kept at. If they get too hot, it may reduce their efficacy.
📋Do you have enough medication - our current fulfilment times for prescriptions/medications can be up to 48 hours. Make sure you order in good time.
📋Do your horses have access to clean and fresh water? They will drink more during these higher temp spells

If you have any concerns, please call the office on 📞 01303 768530 or email 📧[email protected] we are here to help!

With temperatures set to rise this week we would just like to take the opportunity to remind clients below about advice and precautions to be taken through this week of sunshine ☀️

If you have any concerns about your horse or your appointment, please do call 01303 768530 to discuss

We hope you all have a warm and safe week! 💙

☀️ Heatwave update ☀️

🔥With the current heatwave warnings in place across the South of the UK this week, we wanted to update our clients on how we will be approaching appointments over the coming days.
Our motto is “Professional Service, Personalised Care” and that means recognising that every horse, owner and situation is different. Rather than taking a blanket approach, we will be assessing each case individually to ensure the welfare of both horses and people remains our priority.

📞 If you have an appointment booked and would feel more comfortable postponing it until temperatures ease, we completely understand. Please contact the office on 01342 300008 and we will be happy to discuss the options with you.

Similarly, there may be occasions where we contact clients directly if we feel an appointment or procedure is not appropriate to carry out in the forecast conditions. We will endeavour to give as much notice as possible should we need to rearrange an appointment. We will also not be performing any non-essential general anaesthetics during this period.

🌡️ We would encourage everyone to think carefully about their horses during the hottest parts of the day. Where possible, please avoid riding or travelling during peak temperatures, heat stroke can be fatal for both horses and riders and planning activities for the cooler morning or evening hours is the safest option.

🙏🏻 Finally, a gentle reminder to please be kind to your veterinary team. Our Vets and Nurses will be working throughout the heat to care for your horses and may occasionally need a few extra moments to cool down, rehydrate and continue working safely.
Thank you for your understanding and support. Please stay safe, keep cool and do get in touch if you have concerns about your horse during the hot weather.

🐴 Thinking of giving Bute? Read this first...

We completely understand. Your horse is not quite right, and your first thought is often, "I'll just give a sachet of Bute."

But before you do... please give us a call!

Our veterinary team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and advice over the phone is free.

Why?

💊 Oral Bute and Danilon do not work instantly. They can take up to a couple of hours to have their full effect, so if you give a sachet and then call us twenty minutes later, your horse may simply not have had time to respond.

⚠️ Bute is not a harmless medication. In the wrong dose, or in the wrong situation, it can do more harm than good. It can mask the signs of a more serious condition, making it harder for us to diagnose the problem, and overdosing can lead to serious complications including colitis and kidney damage.

It is also worth remembering that medication prescribed for one horse is not necessarily appropriate for another. Age, weight, underlying health conditions and any other medications your horse is receiving all affect whether Bute or Danilon is the right choice.

We know veterinary costs can quickly add up, which is exactly why we are happy to talk things through over the phone first. We can triage the situation, advise whether your horse needs to be seen urgently and, if appropriate, tell you to give oral Bute or Danilon and make sure you are giving the correct dose.

Please help us to help you. If your horse is not quite right, call us on 01342 300008 for Felbridge clients or 01303 768530 for East clients, before reaching for the Bute. It could make all the difference!

☀️ Heatwave incoming for the Bank Holiday weekend! ☀️

If you’re hacking to the pub this weekend and enjoying a cold drink in the sunshine, please remember your horse can’t nip to the bar for a refreshing pint afterwards!

Very hot weather can increase the risk of dehydration and impaction colic, so it’s really important to encourage plenty of fluid intake:
💧 Fresh clean water at all times
🥣 Wet mashes or soaked feeds
🌾 Soaked hay
⚡ Electrolytes where appropriate
🌳 Access to shade and good airflow

If your horse has been exercised, travelled, or is simply feeling the heat, we also advise thoroughly hosing them down with cool water and allowing the water to remain on the body to evaporate naturally, rather than scraping it straight off. As the water evaporates from the skin, it helps cool the horse effectively. Cooling the skin also encourages vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels near the skin surface) which helps the horse release excess body heat more efficiently.

So while you’re sitting in the pub garden this Bank Holiday, make sure your horse is parked in the shade with plenty of water and a good cool-down too!

Back on Track Flu Vaccination Amnesty – May Offer 💉

• Book your horse’s first or restart flu (or combined flu and tetanus) vaccination in May

• Receive the second (21-60 days later) vaccine FREE

This is a great opportunity if your horse’s vaccinations have lapsed or if you previously chose not to vaccinate. Even horses that don’t travel are still at risk. Equine flu is airborne and can travel miles, especially where other horses are hacking, competing, or near bridleways.

Below, we are some info slides about Equine Flu, its spread and ways to reduce it's impact on yard.

If you are ever concerned, or would like to book an appointment to make use of our Amnesty offer please call 01303 768530 or email [email protected]
