🐾 World Spay Day 🐾

Spaying and neutering play an important role in pet health and welfare but it’s not a one-size-fits-all decision.

Some of the benefits can include:
✔ Reduced risk of certain cancers and infections
✔ Prevention of unwanted litters
✔ Reduced roaming and some hormone-driven behaviours
✔ Health and welfare benefits for the wider animal population

Things to consider and discuss:
• The right age and timing for your pet
• Breed, size, lifestyle, and overall health
• Possible effects on weight, joints, or behaviour
• Your individual concerns as an owner

At QVSH General Practice, we believe informed decisions are the best decisions. Our GP team will always take the time to talk openly with you, answer questions honestly, and help you decide what’s right for your pet... not just what’s routine.

📞 If you’d like to discuss spaying or neutering, book a consultation with our team:

🐾 Meet the Team 🐾

Say hello to Katie Radford-Tofts, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses here at QVSH General Practice.

Katie qualified as an RVN in 2019 and has experience working in both general practice and referral centres. She’s completed the ISFM Certificate in Feline Nursing, which means our feline patients are very much in expert (and understanding) hands 🐱

While Katie enjoys all aspects of nursing, she has a definite soft spot for cats and is passionate about making vet visits as calm and stress-free as possible.

Outside of work, Katie is a self-confessed foodie who loves travelling to new places and trying new cuisines with her husband and when she’s at home... She is pictured here with her rescue Kitten, Dora, who was found at a bus stop.

🦷🐾 At-Home Dental Care for Your Pets 🐾🦷

Good dental health starts at home and small, regular habits can make a big difference for dogs, cats, and rabbits.

Here’s what you can do 👇
🐶 Dogs
• Brush teeth regularly using pet-safe toothpaste
• Use vet-approved dental chews or toys
• Keep an eye out for bad breath, red gums, or chewing changes

🐱 Cats
• Tooth brushing (when tolerated!) with cat-specific toothpaste
• Dental diets or treats recommended by your vet
• Watch for subtle signs like drooling, fussiness, or eating less

🐰 Rabbits
• Unlimited good-quality hay - essential for wearing teeth down naturally
• A balanced diet with appropriate greens
• Regularly check for drooling, weight loss, or changes in appetite

🚩 Remember: pets often hide dental pain, and problems can progress quietly over time.

✨ Home care is important, but it doesn’t replace regular dental checks. A professional examination helps catch issues early - before they become painful or serious.

📞 If you have any concerns about your pet’s teeth or mouth, our GP team is happy to help.

Book an appointment with QVSH General Practice to discuss what’s right for your pet.

🐱🦷 Cat Dental Health: More Important Than You Think
Cats are masters at hiding pain - especially when it comes to their teeth.

When dental disease is left untreated, it’s not just “a bit of bad breath”… it can lead to serious health problems, including 👇

🦠 Gingivitis & periodontal disease
Painful inflammation that can progress quickly in cats.
🦷 Tooth resorption
A common (and very painful) condition where the tooth structure breaks down - often with no obvious signs at home.
❤️ Heart, kidney & liver disease
Bacteria from infected gums can enter the bloodstream and affect vital organs.
😿 Chronic pain & behaviour changes
Dropping food, eating on one side, hiding more, irritability, or reduced grooming.

🚩 Signs your cat may have dental disease:
• Bad breath
• Red or bleeding gums
• Drooling
• Difficulty eating or reduced appetite
• Weight loss
• Behaviour changes

✨ Regular dental checks can catch problems early... before they become painful or life-limiting.

🦷 Pet Dental Myths - Busted! 🐶🐱
Let’s clear a few things up, because we hear these all the time 👇

❌ “Bad breath is normal for pets”
➡️ Smelly breath is often a sign of dental disease - not just “dog breath”.

❌ “Dry food cleans their teeth”
➡️ Unfortunately, dental disease can still build up without proper checks and care.

❌ “They’re eating fine, so their teeth must be fine”
➡️ Pets are experts at hiding pain. Dental problems often go unnoticed.

❌ “They’re too old for dental care”
➡️ Good dental health is especially important for senior pets.

✨ Healthy teeth = a healthier, happier pet ✨

Dental disease doesn’t just affect the mouth... it can impact the heart, kidneys, and overall wellbeing.

💙 Meet Our Clinical Training Scholars – Soft Tissue Surgery Residents 💙

Our Soft Tissue Surgery Residents, Moira, Layla and Patrick, are qualified veterinary surgeons undertaking a three-year Senior Clinical Training Scholarship in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery at The Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH).

Working alongside our Senior Soft Tissue Surgery Team, residents receive advanced practical training while completing the research and publication requirements that form a core part of their specialist residency. QVSH provides an exceptional clinical environment, enabling residents to develop the specialist skills, experience and academic foundations essential for their future careers.

✨ Moira has recently completed her residency, and we are delighted to celebrate her achievement. During her training, Moira particularly enjoyed skin reconstruction and abdominal surgery, valuing the wide variety of complex surgical cases, learning under the direct supervision of ECVS Diplomates, and the strong team-based, multidisciplinary approach to case management.

✨ Layla has a particular passion for median sternotomy (open chest surgery) and really enjoys working with the soft tissue surgery team. She values learning how to become a surgeon in a safe, supportive and controlled environment, while gaining hands-on experience with complex surgical cases.

✨ Patrick highlights that the best part of residency life is working collaboratively with colleagues across different clinical services, learning from their expertise and being part of a large multidisciplinary hospital. His favourite procedures are cardiothoracic surgeries, reflecting his strong interest in complex surgical cases.

Moira, Layla and Patrick all contribute meaningfully to our surgical service, patient care and teaching, and we are incredibly proud of their dedication, enthusiasm and progress.

👏 Congratulations to Moira on completing her residency and thank you to all three for the commitment they bring to QVSH every day.

19/01/2026

As the days get longer and warmer, cats naturally spend more time outdoors and spring also marks the start of breeding season.

🐱 Why neuter your cat before spring?
- Neutered cats are less likely to roam, fight or get injured
- Reduces unwanted pregnancies and helps control the cat population
- Lowers the risk of certain cancers and health issues
- Can reduce spraying, calling, and aggressive behaviour
- With increased roaming comes a higher risk of getting lost...

That’s why it’s so important to also remember:
📌 Microchipping is a legal requirement for cats
By law, all cats must be microchipped and the good news is this can often be done at the same time as neutering, saving your cat an extra visit and stress.

Spring is a busy time, so planning ahead is key. If your cat isn’t yet neutered or microchipped, now is the perfect time to book in.

📞 Call 01223 330945 to speak to our GP team
We’re happy to discuss neutering, microchipping and what’s best for your cat 🐾
