As well as many other veterinary practices in the UK we are currently experiencing a shortage of Bluetongue vaccine. We are currently doing a waiting list for those who would like to vaccinate their herd/flock.

Manufacturers are working hard to meet the growing demand for BTV-3 vaccines across England and Wales. However, managing vaccine supply for vector-borne diseases like Bluetongue presents unique challenges.

If your client intends to vaccinate their livestock, we strongly urge our farm vet members to encourage them place orders for all required doses well in advance.

The unpredictable nature of disease outbreaks means that demand can escalate rapidly, potentially outpacing available supply.

A severe outbreak could lead to significant supply constraints as farmers rush to vaccinate their animals. By planning ahead, you not only secure necessary vaccines for your stock but also help manufacturers better forecast and manage production.

The message is - Assess your risk, Protect your business, and Defend your livestock. Don't wait until an outbreak occurs, by then, it may be too late.

Join the effort to through proactive vaccination planning.

We thought this footage was too good not to share…. Captured here is Abbie, the daughter of our Head Nurse Sarah.
Abbie & Rocco have spent the last month in Spain competing in the 6 year old classes gaining some great results. We wish them a safe trip back to the Uk. πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ πŸ”œ πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

A lovely write up for Bibi & Major in the Horse & Hound today.
Bibi is the daughter of Claire, our Client Services Administrator. Many of our clients will know Claire as our first point of contact at Cambridge Farm Vets. 😊

We hope you are all enjoying the sunshine as much as the lovely Mabel here πŸŒžπŸ–πŸ· (whose equally lovely mum sent us the fabulous cake below!)

Mabel presented to our vet Maedee after showing abnormal bleeding during her seasons. She had an ultrasound scan at home and there were changes seen in her ovaries and uterus. These are common causes of disease in mature sows. As a result of the findings, a spay was performed (removal of both ovaries and uterus) and we hope that Mabel will be a much happier pig now! If you have concerns about changes in seasons or behaviour in your pet pigs then please let us know as these are usually straight forward surgeries which can really improve quality of life. Also, did you know we recommend routine spaying of pet pigs if you don’t plan to breed? Spaying when they are younger makes the surgery shorter and less risky and also avoids you both having to deal with seasons and issues such as Mabel later on in life. If you are planning to get a pet pig our vets would be very happy to discuss the options with you.

A great way to end the week with this amazing cake from a lovely client! 😊

Bluetongue vaccine update!

Following the extension of the restricted zone, most our clients will find themselves with a restricted area now. Vaccination for BTV-3 is now available without a special licence for all of those clients should they want to vaccinate. It is worth bearing in mind the time of year now and vaccination may not bring protection until after the weather turns cold (colder!) and the risk of midge transmission therefore reduces. If you are interested in the vaccine or would like to discuss it or anything else regarding Bluetongue then please give reception a call!

Last week Claire (our Client Services Administrator) headed South to the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead with her daughter Bibi & her fabulous connemara pony Crusheen Shadow.
Bibi and Major (as he is known at home) had qualified for the final of both the Intermediate Young Rider Section and the Open Ridden Connemara/New Forest class - gaining a credible 4th & 6th place.
We will look forward to following their future success.

Responsible Use of Medicines Course

We will be running another session of this course for those who could not attend earlier this summer. This is an afternoon training course at the Vet School concentrating on the drugs used on your farms, how to safely store and administer them. This fulfils the responsible use of medicines requirements by Red Tractor. If you have not completed one of these courses, then you need to do so to be compliant if you have medicines on your farm! (Please note, those that attended the course that was run here in 2019 are no longer valid!).

Date: Friday 9th September 2022
Time: 1pm (lunch will be provided)
Location: Dept of Veterinary Medicine, Madingley Rd, Cambridge CB30ES. Please meet outside Farm Animal Reception
Cost: Β£20 per person, lunch will be provided.

If you would like to attend, please call the lovely Reception team on 01223337647

As part of the Open Cambridge 2022 programme join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Cambridge University Farm on Saturday 17th September.

The farm includes a dairy herd and sheep flock kept to provide clinical training for students at the Vet School, and an anaerobic digester producing electricity from slurry produced by the dairy cows.

Visitors will have the opportunity to see the animals, machinery and AD plant on a guided tour led by staff working on the farm.

To your average passer-by Cambridge University Farm may look like your usual farm, complete with over 200 cows and a similar number of sheep, but there’s far more to this farm than meets the eye. The history of the Farm stretches back to 1900 when it was established in Impington, but in recent years the Farm has experienced more than just a relocation – it’s been busy making impressive changes and commitments through a new Sustainability Policy.

Congratulations to Rob Knott, Farm Animal Teaching Clinician at the Vet School, for winning the Cambridge SU Student-Led Teaching Award (SLTA) for Small Group Teaching at the University of Cambridge.
On being presented with his award Rob said: "I spent my whole morning shoulder-deep in the backsides of cows, and this evening I've won this incredible award. So you might imagine what the highlight of my day has been...even more so, this is the pinnacle of my career as an educator and I'm extremely honoured. Thank you to our final year students for nominating me, it has been a delight working alongside you!"
