So the last major work on the house interior is a total refit of both the kitchen and utility room to bring it into both a more open plan space and get rid of the 1970's look in favour of a more modern but classic style.

All the work surfaces, sinks, existing units and cupboards are being removed. Oven will also be moved and some boxed in areas will be removed to create more space but with more usefull work surfaces.

As the work to start installing the new cupboards etc is due to start at the end of June in the utility room and the main kitchen in July, it's now all hands on deck (well Sam and I) removing the old tiled floor, kitchen units, wallpaper and old boiler. Typically for us, this just happens to coincide with the hottest weather of the year !

It's been a busy few days, trying to both make the most of the good weather and get cracked on before we start having the ExcaliburDax Dachshunds Breeding & Fertility pups picked up from the middle of next week.

The collapsed patio and "path to nowhere" are now dug over, prepped and grass seeded. The abandoned w**d bed has been rebuilt, w**ded and seeded with wildflowers and the two overgrown and collapsed stone wall areas by the rear of the house have been rebuilt, cleared and ground cover (bee friendly) plants have gone in.

Last but not least was the big guys kennel area. Still some work to do but now shored up with hedging planted. Next step is to turn the VERY rough ground into a rockery and then grass seed the area next to it.

Garden is now on hold for a few days as we have meetings with the kitchen planner and fitter and also the builder to sort an outside wall.

As we always say, we're getting there.......

Now that's a lot of paving slabs (actually 5 stacks not 4 as one is hidden behind)

So Aprils project (other than our ExcaliburDax Dachshunds Breeding & Fertility pupz) has all been about getting back on with the garden after the appalling wet winter. More hedging has already gone in, bulbs and seeds planted out and main lawn finally cut so it no longer resembles a jungle.

Now onto the larger projects of removing an old, collapsed patio and a pathway to nowhere and reclaiming it to lawn along with an old flowerbed nearer the house and building what will be a wildflower bed in place of what was a w**d patch.

The reason for the collapsed patio became apparent once the slabs were lifted when we discovered multiple large ants nests and what appears to be an entrance to a burrow. Wildlife camera out in that area tonight then.

One nice surprise was coming across what we've identified as stag beetle larvae near the tool shed which we've left alone as its a protected species, so I guess we'll add that to the ever increasing list of wildlife we have on our doorstep or frequenting our gardens.

So far spotted have been buzzards (6 regularly over our land) a barn owl most nights, slow worms (lost count and again protected) bats, toads, deer, herons, egrets, pheasants and pretty sure we spotted a stoat.

So brilliantly at just 5 weeks old 5 of Xan & Fox’s 6 puppies have found their amazing forever families and we couldn’t be more delighted πŸ’™πŸ’œπŸ§‘πŸ€πŸ’›.

The last one still looking for his new sofa is the adorable Mr Red (ExcaliburDax Fun Sized) ❀️. He is a stunning chocolate and cream dapple who is a terrible fuss monster, cuddle bug and licker 😜. Can we tempt anyone??

Well here's something I never thought I'd be saying.......

Welcome to our two newest additions, Kit and Kat.

These two are from farm/barn cat parents / lineage, so are not your usual domestic kitty. They have now taken up residence in one of our secure out buildings having been treated for fleas, worms etc etc and came to us through a friend who has a small holding locally, where he has his own to keep the rodent population in check.

Given the state of the garden when we moved in, its no surprise that we too have a rather significant population of field mice that are rather closer to the house and associated buildings than we'd like and as we have no intention of using traps or poisons, the addition of two furry little natural hunters is the best option.

So for the moment, they are confined to barracks until they get used to the new environment (and they are very young) and gradually we will increase their access to areas over the coming weeks. During the day when our dogs are out, they will have access to the outbuildings and garage as they are all interconnected, and once the dogs have gone to bed, they will have free access to the grounds and garden areas and hopefully the little critters close to the house will decide to relocate to a safer area.

We may have been a bit quiet on here with regard to the renovations recently but alongside Xan's pregnancy and pups, we have been working away on a few projects.

Firstly is the puppy play room. Now the wall has been repaired, we've been able to get in and not only decorate but the new floor is also down. Just some finishing touches to add ( blinds etc) and we should be all done.

Second is the new games room. New wood floor now in, decorated through with new lights and switches and a fun background for the dartboard installed. Just need to add furniture, blinds and pool table and it'll be finished.

Third was weather dependant but desperately needed sorting and that was the roadside fencing and hedge planting. Most of the dead trees cut back to expose the damaged existing fence. Existing fence shored up and new stock fence added. Still some clearing to do and then the willow hedge can go in. That will be followed by a second run of red Robin hedging lower down for added security and finished off with scattered assorted wildflowers.

And whilst this is going on, our little girl Xan has given birth to a stunning litter of dapple pups 🐢!

Hi all, I realised I completely forgot to post these photos of before and after of the porch, hall and staircase 😬. The upstairs landing/hall has also been done the same but I didn’t get any before photos.
