Last round up of the June news , a Midsummer Llama Drama on the 21st when suri Mum , Lotza Spotza , delivered a leggy suri girl at 367 days gestation , whilst lying down , and with a little help from me . Up and walking soon enough , strong and healthy , but no inclination to nurse, no seeking the milk bar , no connection with her lovely attentive Mum . Despite much gentle cajoling , and holding her mouth on the teats , stabling Mum and cria together , after 4 hours I had to resort to bottle feeding with powdered colostrum . I had seen this behaviour once before , and knew it was dummy cria syndrome, far more common in foals , and only my second one in over 300 births . The remedy is known as the Madigan Squeeze , and you may not want to see the photos , but there is a happy ending !
The Madigan Squeeze technique is a veterinary procedure developed by Dr. John Madigan to treat Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome ("dummy foal syndrome") in newborn animals. By wrapping a soft rope around the chest and applying steady pressure, the technique mimics the birth canal, inducing deep non-REM sleep to "reset" the animal's neurological system.Developed originally at the University of California, Davis, the technique is used by veterinarians and breeders to treat unresponsive foals, calves, and other livestock. It successfully drops elevated neurosteroid levels, allowing animals to wake up with a normal urge to stand, nurse, and bond with their mother.
