- Meet Dottie — Our little tick magnet 🥺

Dottie came into Henbrook HQ after being spotted on camera with an excessive burden of ticks, particularly across her face. On closer inspection, it was sadly much worse than I’d first realised.

After several sessions to carefully remove the adult ticks, we discovered she was also absolutely peppered with hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny seed ticks.

Seed ticks are far too numerous and tiny to remove individually, and attempting to do so would be incredibly stressful for such a little hedgehog. Instead, Dottie has been given appropriate medication, and thankfully they’re slowly dropping away.

A heavy tick burden can sometimes be a sign that a hedgehog is already unwell, as ticks are often attracted to compromised animals. Thankfully, Dottie’s samples have been clear so far, so it’s possible she may simply have encountered a tick nest.

She’s being closely monitored here at Henbrook HQ, and we’re keeping everything crossed that she’ll only need a short stay with us before she’s ready to head back home 🤎🦔

Another month has somehow flown by, and before we head into September, we wanted to say a huge, heartfelt thank you for all of your incredibly kind messages following our special news 🥰🤰🏻

Here’s a little insight into the running costs of Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue this month:

🧤 Rescue essentials — gloves, blue roll & puppy pads, puppy mousse, baby cat biscuits, supplements & Oralade: £269.48

💉 Medication — antibiotics, pain relief, fluids, ringworm treatments & wormers: £111.67

🏥 Vet fees & prescriptions: £139.50

Total: £520.74 🤎

It’s full tummies.
It’s pain relief for a little body that hurts.
It’s medication helping fight infection and parasites.

This summer, we’ve teamed up with our foster friends at Bliss Gate Nature Explorers to give some of our 2026 orphans a very special stepping stone on their journey back to the wild.

Last year, with guidance from Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue, Louisa helped rehabilitate three hoglets found at Bliss Gate HQ.

This year, they’re helping us again! Four of our precious orphans have now graduated to Bliss Gate Nature Explorers, where they can continue growing, developing their natural behaviours and preparing for the day they return to the wild 🌿🤎🦔

- Ariel & Flounder — It’s enrichment time for our youngest orphans here at Henbrook HQ! 🍃

Although hedgehogs are insectivores and don’t actually eat plant material, they absolutely love exploring new smells and scents — and mint is a particular favourite! 🌿👃

As they grow up in the wild, they’d naturally encounter all sorts of new smells, textures and tastes as they explore their surroundings. So introducing safe sensory enrichment helps encourage those natural behaviours while keeping their curious little minds busy.

And of course, Ariel and Flounder were very keen to investigate! 🥹🦔🍃

- We’ve Been Keeping A Secret - We’re expanding… but not quite in the way you might think! 🥰

This year has undoubtedly been unprecedented and, for so many reasons, completely unpredictable. There’s been some very big news that we’ve kept quietly to ourselves… until now.

The servants, Holly and Matt, are absolutely over the moon to finally share that we’re expecting our first baby! 🥹🤎

In just a few short weeks, Holly will be heading off on maternity leave for the biggest and most special adventure yet. As you can imagine, this will mean a very big change for our little family — and it will also have a knock-on effect on Henbrook Hedgehog Rescue.

So, Henbrook HQ will be going into hibernation this winter, along with the hedgehogs. But we will, of course be continuing to help prickles next year 🦔💤

The rescue phone will have an automated message in place to help direct anyone who needs advice, including information on where to seek help for any hedgehog in need over the winter months.

We don’t have exact dates just yet, but we’ll of course keep you all updated with any changes over the coming weeks.

For now, we’re just incredibly excited (and slightly terrified! 🤭) to share this very special news with all of you who have supported us, our precious prickles and Henbrook HQ.

Until then, together, we will continue our mission - Helping hedgehogs heal, thrive and return to the wild 🤎🦔

Another one of this year’s precious orphans, and just look at her now!

Flo was one of the Cars family of hoglets who arrived at Henbrook HQ at the beginning of July. They had been seen without Mum for several days.

After lots of intensive care, feeds, treatment and plenty of growing, these tiny hoglets have blossomed into the teenagers they are today.

And she’s also learnt not to cover herself head to toe in her food!🤎🦔

- Thank You - Last week, thanks to your incredibly kind donations, we were able to restock our Critical Care supplies. Something we’ve rely on so much over this busy summer 🥰

We found some great value at The Vet Superstore and ordered 2 x 400g bags. Not only did they send me the loveliest email after I placed our order, but they very generously refunded one of the bags of Critical Care and also kindly donated supplies of Oralade to our little rescue.

We are so incredibly grateful for their generosity, and for the lovely words and support they’ve shown us. It really does mean so much to a small independent rescue like ours.

Every little bit of support truly does make a difference and helps us continue providing the very best care for our precious prickles.

- Buzz - Is in ICU 🥺

Unfortunately, Buzz is another 2026 orphan who has been impacted by the environmental factors we’ve seen this year.

After battling a really nasty case of ringworm, Buzz had reached a very healthy 552g. He’d graduated to his big-boy hutch and was simply putting on weight ready for release.

But then, along with his brother Woody, we noticed changes in his eating habits.

Like many rescues around the country are experiencing, despite previously clear samples, Buzz suddenly tested positive for Coccidia.

We simply don’t know why. Could the extreme heatwaves be playing a part? Are current temperatures allowing Coccidia to thrive? Could it have been picked up from stagnant water? Or could it have been lying dormant in his gut, passed down from Mum?

There are so many unanswered questions🥺

Buzz is now on a second course of antibiotics, treatment for Coccidia, supportive fluids, Oralade and Critical Care. He’s receiving absolutely everything we can give him.

For now, all we can do is keep fighting alongside him.

- Behind The Scenes — Samples, samples, samples! ✔️🔬

Seems the servant is slightly obsessed with looking at our poop… 👀💩

But there’s actually a very important reason why!

As our orphan hoglets grow into juveniles, we regularly monitor faecal samples to look for parasites and other clues that something might not be quite right. 🕵️‍♀️🔬

This year, we’ve had several little ones who appeared to be doing well, only to suddenly develop subtle changes in appetite, weight or behaviour. Sometimes, their poo can give us the first clue that something is lurking beneath the surface — even before they become properly unwell.

Regular sampling means we can spot potential problems earlier, investigate further and start treatment when it’s needed. It’s one more tool in our toolbox to give these little prickles the best chance of getting through everything this year has thrown at them.
