This is why I love my job!✨

A month ago, I met a dog who was terrified of me.
Every visit was met with barking, distance, and a whole lot of uncertainty. He didn’t know me, and I didn’t expect trust to come easily - especially for this rescue dog who has clearly been through a lot before coming to this home, his forever home.

Fast forward to now, after weeks of gentle check-ins, patience, and showing up consistently two to three times a week - we’ve built a beautiful bond.
He now comes to me for cuddles, happily accepts treats (ham is the absolute favourite) and lets me walk around his space without stress or fear.

Moments like these remind me exactly why I love my job so much. It’s not just about the walks - it’s about building trust, forming connections, and seeing nervous, unsure dogs learn that they’re safe and loved.

Watching this boy’s transformation has been the highlight of my month - and a reminder that even the smallest wins are worth celebrating!💛

Here’s to the quiet progress, the tail wags hard-won, and the power of patience🐾✨

That’s a wrap on the loveliest dog sit with these adorable Cockapoos - what a joy they’ve been to look after!🐾
They’ve been my little shadows during the day, yes even to the toilet! And the best snuggle companions during the night!
We’ve been on plenty of long walks together - even some where we got caught in the rain ☔️ plus they enjoyed a good game of fetch with their favourite ball!

Every dog has their own personality and these two are no exception, they’re full of cheekiness and love! Already missing them and their bouncy morning greetings!🐾🩷💙

I always hear dog professionals say that ‘trust takes time’ and this is a perfect example of just that!✨

When I first met this gorgeous boy, he barked at me the entire visit. He was nervous, unsure, and needed space and that was completely okay.
Over the past few months, we’ve taken it slow, building a relationship at his pace, and I’m so proud of how far he’s come.

This week we completed a four-day dog sit together, and for the first time, he was able to be totally content without his owner and just myself for company.
From the moment I arrived, his tail didn’t stop wagging and we spent our days enjoying enrichment activities and calm, adapted ‘walks’ that felt safe and positive for him.

He’s proof that with a lot of patience, understanding, and consistency: nervous dogs can learn to feel secure.
Watching his confidence grow has been a privilege✨💛

Our wonderful time together comes to an end!🩷
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of dog sitting this gorgeous girl - she’s the queen of chill, champion snuggler, plus a sunbathing expert!

She’s loved her walks and exploring all the new smells, especially when there’s a snuffle mat involved!
Carrot treasure hunts = 10/10!🥕
She’s made me laugh with her little grumps when I wouldn’t share my food — nice try though!

Going to miss her sweet face and waggy greetings.

🔆 HOT WEATHER 🔆

Here at Poppins and Paws as the temperature rises, it’s super important that we make sure our furry friends are staying safe and cool.
Dogs can overheat quickly especially seniors, puppies and, those with thick coats.

At Poppins and Paws when the temperature is 19 degrees or above we will ensure the safety of our furry friends by offering alternative arrangements.
1 - we can reschedule walk for a cooler time, either morning or evening (if possible).
2 - we can offer indoor playtime with limited outdoor time, no more than twenty minutes.
3 - if possible we can walk in shaded areas and always carry water with us in the hotter weather.

Here are a few warm weather tips for your furry friends, to keep tails wagging:
• Walk early or late: Avoid the midday sun. Early mornings and cooler evenings are safest.
• Paw check: If the pavement’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
• Hydration is key: Always carry water for your dog on walks - and take breaks in the shade.
• Never leave dogs in cars: Even a few minutes can be dangerous.
• Know the signs of heatstroke: Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, and wobbliness. If you’re worried, call a vet ASAP.

At Poppins and Paws, we have completed a ‘Canine First Aid’ course so are fully aware of the signs of heatstroke if ever to occur.

CANINE BEHAVIOUR COURSE🐾💛

Yesterday I completed a Canine Behaviour course with Sunflower Paws - Academy & Enrichment Services because working with dogs isn’t just about walkies and belly rubs (though we love those too!)🐾

We dived deeper into understanding how our four legged friends think, feel and communicate - understanding Canine Behaviour is key to building trust and confidence between myself and all my furry friends🐶
Whether it’s a nervous rescue or cheeky adventurer, every dog deserves love and care that’s built on knowledge and patience!💛

I am looking forward to bringing these new skills into my walks and daily interactions! This course has given me the understanding to support all my four legged friends with confidence, patience and compassion!💛

Today marks the end of dog sitting with this big handsome boy!💙
We had the best time together, making the most of the sunny evenings with peaceful walks along with visits to the local dog park.
He absolutely loved showing off all his tricks (only if he got a treat afterwards) - such a clever boy!
I also kept his mind busy with enrichment activities including the licky mat and snuffle mat - he’s so good at sniffing out all the treats, his favourite was the carrot!🥕

It’s been an absolute pleasure spending time together and hopefully I’ll see him again soon!🐾💙
