Why Sleep is just as important as walks for your dog💤
As a dog walker, I see it every week: dogs who are overtired not under-exercised.
Sleep plays a huge role in your dog’s behaviour, health, and happiness.
🧠 Better behaviour & learning - Sleep helps dogs process training and experiences. Well-rested dogs focus better, listen more, and cope better with the world around them.
💪 Physical recovery & growth - Muscles repair during sleep, and puppies release growth hormones while resting. Active dogs need downtime to stay injury-free.
💜 Emotional regulation - Lack of sleep can lead to anxiety, reactivity, irritability, and “wild” zoomies.
Many dogs don’t need more exercise, they need more rest.
🛡️ Stronger immune system - Dogs that sleep well are better at fighting illness and recovering from stress.
🦴 Joint & mobility support - Especially important for senior dogs and large breeds, rest helps reduce stiffness and inflammation.
There are many signs that your dog may be overtired including struggling to settle at home, poor recall or listening, over-reacting to other dogs or noises and seemingly ‘endless’ zoomies.
Walks are important, but so is recovery time after them. Calm time, naps, and predictable routines help dogs feel safe and balanced.
If you’re ever unsure whether your dog needs more exercise or more rest, I’m always happy to chat🐶💜
