This is “Junior.”
What a handsome pup 😍

Junior has hit adolescence, and today we worked on recall.
He was a model student, and his owners now have the tools and plenty of ideas to keep Junior motivated to come back when called.
One of the biggest misunderstandings about recall is this:
‘A dog with poor recall is being naughty or ignoring you’. What’s really happening is what the dog is currently doing, is more reinforcing than what you’re offering.
The good news?
That can absolutely be changed.

With the right approach, you don’t just become someone calling your dog back — you become the best option they have. 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Play 🐾

“My dog doesn’t like toys.”
“He just destroys them.”
“He grabs it and runs off.”

Usually the problem isn’t the toy — it’s the meaning behind it.

Food works naturally.
Play is learned.

A toy on the floor is just an object.
A toy that starts a game with you becomes exciting.

Dogs don’t become motivated by the toy itself, they become motivated by what it predicts:

You = toy = play = feels good

That’s why shared play builds engagement, relationship and great recall.

In recall, coming back stops being the end of freedom and starts predicting something good.
If the fun only exists away from you, the dog stays away.
If the fun lives with you, they come back faster.

Start small, keep it short, and finish while they still want more.
Anticipation is what creates motivation. 🐾🐾
