Positive Paws Dog Training

Positive Paws Dog Training 1-2-1 Dog training Hi, I’m Julia – a professional dog trainer based in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
(1)

I hold a degree in Animal Behaviour and have a strong background in working with both rescue dogs and assistance dogs. After completing my degree, I spent several years working in rescue environments. This gave me first-hand insight into the challenges and rewards of bringing a rescue dog into your life. As a lifelong owner of rescue dogs myself, I understand how important it is to support both do

gs and their humans during this transition. I can help with everything from settling your new dog in, to understanding certain behaviours, building a strong bond, and working on general obedience training. I also have extensive experience in puppy development, having spent over nine years supporting volunteers and their puppies on the journey to becoming assistance dogs. I offer guidance on early socialisation, puppy behaviours, settling at home, and foundational training. All of my training is based on positive reinforcement – using what your dog finds rewarding (such as treats, toys, praise, or cuddles) to encourage behaviours we want to see more of. This might include recall, house training, polite greetings, or building confidence around new people, objects, or situations. Training plays a vital role in strengthening your relationship with your dog. My goal is to help you build a deeper understanding and connection with your canine companion. Dogs are part of our families, and I believe they deserve to be treated with the same respect and empathy as any other family member. They just need a little guidance to navigate our world – just as we sometimes need help understanding theirs. I’m also a mum of three, and I’m passionate about involving children in dog training. If your kids would like to take part in sessions, learn about enrichment activities (like games or Kongs), or better understand dog behaviour, they are always welcome to join in!

Training isn’t about forcing dogs to fit into our world — it’s about learning how to build a world together where they can thrive.

A big part of my job is supporting owners in gently adjusting expectations so life feels easier for both ends of the lead. ❤️

✨🐾 Training Tip Tuesday! 🐾✨

Have you ever heard of a jackpot reward?

It’s when your dog does something really amazing — like a beautiful recall — and instead of a single treat, they get a whole handful of tasty rewards!

Why? Because jackpots make training extra fun and tell your dog, “Wow, that was incredible — do it again!” They’re a great way to boost motivation and build stronger, more reliable behaviours.

Check out today’s video to see jackpots in action!

👉 And if you’d love a dog who races back the moment you call, my next Recall Class starts October 5th. We’ll cover jackpots (and so much more!) to help you build a recall you can count on.

Message me to grab your spot — spaces are limited!

Last minute social walk for existing clients (past and current) 🐶

I am planning a little social walk this coming Sunday at 10.30am at Frenchay Common. This is likely to be an on lead walk (depending on numbers and dogs attending) for around an hour and is a great opportunity to socialise with other dogs and families. This will be a really relaxed walk with the option of covering a bit of training too ☺️

Kids are (as always) welcome!

£10 per family. Please make sure you let me know if you’d like to attend and I’ll send you details for where to meet!

What are your similarities with your dog?

I want to hear the funny, the serious and the ugly 🤪🐶

If anyone is interested in stress free grooming and would like some real life tips on how to make that happen I highly recommend Woody's Holistic Grooming and the below webinar

🐶✨ We’re turning big conference talks into real-life grooming tips!

Back in July, I attended the incredible Animal Behaviour Kent Conference — packed with amazing talks from behaviourists, vets and trainers. There were representatives from all across the pet industry, but can you believe there were only four groomers in the room?!
So much of what we learned applies directly to grooming… both at home and in the salon.

We’re on a mission to get more pet owners and groomers understanding why behaviour and grooming go hand in hand. So this Sunday (21st Sept), we’re running an online webinar where we’ll break down some of the key presentations and show how they can be put into practice for the grooming environment.

✨ I’ll be sharing how I use Sarah Fisher’s Free Work in my salon — a brilliant way of helping dogs settle, build confidence and create a positive experience from the very first visit.
✨ You’ll also hear from Sue Williamson, Victoria Shepherd, Cheryl McCauley and our guest Andy Hale, covering everything from recognising pain and discomfort to handling resource guarding and reducing stress.

📅 Sunday 21st Sept | 11am–5pm
🎟️ £25 (recorded if you can’t join live)
👉 Book here: https://www.takingthegrrr.co.uk/courses/wewereinthegroom

Whether you’re a dog owner wanting to make home grooming calmer, or a professional groomer wanting to expand your toolkit, this is going to be packed with insights you can actually use. 🐕💛

✨ Training Tip Tuesday ✨

Many people don’t realise how long it can take a rescue dog to truly settle into a new home. It’s not about days or weeks — sometimes it’s months before they feel safe enough to show their real personality. That’s why we talk about the 6-6-6 rule:

🐾 A message from me, your new rescue dog… 🐾

When I first come home with you, everything feels so big and scary. New smells, new faces, new rules. I don’t yet know if I’m safe.
• 6 days: I’m overwhelmed. I may hide, I may cry, I may act out. I’m just trying to survive.
• 6 weeks: I start to learn your routine. I’m testing boundaries. You might see some behaviours you don’t like — but I’m not being “bad,” I’m still learning what’s safe.
• 6 months: I’m finally starting to trust. This is when you’ll see the real me, the dog who wants to love you with all my heart.

So please, keep things calm and quiet. Don’t overwhelm me with too many visitors, adventures, or expectations right away. I promise I’m trying — but stress sometimes makes me act in ways you might not understand.

With your love and patience, I’ll learn that this really is my forever home. 💛
