Positive Paws Dog Training

Positive Paws Dog Training 1-2-1 Dog training Hi, I’m Julia – a professional dog trainer based in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
(1)

I hold a degree in Animal Behaviour and have a strong background in working with both rescue dogs and assistance dogs. After completing my degree, I spent several years working in rescue environments. This gave me first-hand insight into the challenges and rewards of bringing a rescue dog into your life. As a lifelong owner of rescue dogs myself, I understand how important it is to support both do

gs and their humans during this transition. I can help with everything from settling your new dog in, to understanding certain behaviours, building a strong bond, and working on general obedience training. I also have extensive experience in puppy development, having spent over nine years supporting volunteers and their puppies on the journey to becoming assistance dogs. I offer guidance on early socialisation, puppy behaviours, settling at home, and foundational training. All of my training is based on positive reinforcement – using what your dog finds rewarding (such as treats, toys, praise, or cuddles) to encourage behaviours we want to see more of. This might include recall, house training, polite greetings, or building confidence around new people, objects, or situations. Training plays a vital role in strengthening your relationship with your dog. My goal is to help you build a deeper understanding and connection with your canine companion. Dogs are part of our families, and I believe they deserve to be treated with the same respect and empathy as any other family member. They just need a little guidance to navigate our world – just as we sometimes need help understanding theirs. I’m also a mum of three, and I’m passionate about involving children in dog training. If your kids would like to take part in sessions, learn about enrichment activities (like games or Kongs), or better understand dog behaviour, they are always welcome to join in!

It’s all those amazing rescue dogs out there that have changed our lives 😍

Video of Ludo doing what he does best: To make us laugh (and giggle in Lyra’s case) by simply being him!

12 years old and an absolute nutter but we adore him so very much ❤️

Please share your photos and videos to celebrate your rescue (and non rescue) dogs 🐕

THIS is what an introduction to grooming should look like!
It’s not about the grooming, it’s about building confidence and a good relationship with the groomer 🙌

I know it’s a bank holiday weekend but classes are running as normal tomorrow and we are excited to see you all ☺️

It’s easy to assume something is “wrong” when a dog stops and doesn’t want to walk. Many people label this as laziness, stubbornness, or even defiance.

But in reality, this is often one of the most important parts of socialisation.

When a puppy pauses like this, they’re not refusing to move—they’re taking in information. They’re watching, listening, sniffing, and processing the world around them. This is how they learn what is safe, what is normal, and how to feel confident in different environments.

If we rush them through these moments, we can unintentionally skip the very experiences that help build calm, resilient dogs. The walk itself isn’t the goal. What matters most is how your dog feels while they’re out.

Giving your dog time to stop, observe, and explore at their own pace can make a huge difference to their confidence and overall behaviour. Sometimes, standing still and sniffing is far more valuable than covering distance.

Next time your dog pauses on a walk, try giving them a moment. You might be surprised at how much they gain from it.
