World Turtle Day
Turtles are not only fascinating animals; they also play vital roles in nature. Sea turtles help keep seagrass beds and coral reefs healthy, while freshwater and land counterparts support balanced ecosystems. Their shells are part of their skeletons, formed from dozens of fused bones, and some species navigate using Earth's magnetic field to return to the beaches where they hatched.

These reptiles have been around for more than 200 million years—long before dinosaurs—yet many species are now struggling to survive. World Turtle Day, celebrated every year on 23 May, shines a spotlight on one of Earth's oldest living survivors. Created as a global awareness day, today celebrates turtles and tortoises while drawing attention to the threats they face, from habitat loss and plastic pollution to illegal wildlife trade and fishing bycatch. It also serves as a call to action. Simple choices, such as reducing single-use plastics or protecting nesting areas, can help ensure these remarkable animals are still around for future generations.

Bit of a weird collect yesterday. A lady messaged me several days ago about a snake left in her house by some friends who had been living there for 4 months. She said they had left a snake and it was a boa and it was gonna eat her and her little dog too. She showed me a video of a box atop a wardrobe with a pillowcase in it quite obviously having some living contents. She said she was off to her sisters in fear and apparently left her phone in the taxi before telling me address or going further. I had suggested immediate collection, but she was already off and running.
Yesterday whilst I was traveling north on family issues she got back to me and I sent Rhian Sharp round to grab in my place.. snake now ensconced in a heated vivarium hopefully 4 months on a wardrobe hasn't done too much damage.
