One of my favourite things to do on walks is use the environment as our playground! πŸΎπŸ’š

While we were on holiday, I looked for lots of safe opportunities to keep Ella engaged with me while also building her confidence. Every little challenge helps her think, problem-solve and enjoy exploring the world.

We practised: 🐾 2 Paws On – placing her front paws on rocks, logs and walls. 🐾 Hop It Up – jumping up onto safe objects like large rocks and benches (even Nessie got a visit! πŸ˜‚).

These fun little games aren't just tricks. They help build confidence, body awareness, focus and strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Best of all, they're easy to include on everyday walks!

πŸŒΏπŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Holiday planning with a noise-sensitive dog... it's all about setting them up to succeed. πŸ’š
One of our days out on holiday was our trip into Inverness. Every part of the day was planned with Ella in mind to help her stay calm and enjoy the experience. πŸ₯°

Ella is very noise sensitive and can struggle with traffic, crowds and busier environments, so we always think carefully about how we can make each outing as positive as possible. ❀️
Instead of parking in the busy city centre, we parked just outside by the river. This meant we could enjoy a nice, peaceful riverside walk before heading through a small woodland, allowing Ella to start the day feeling relaxed and settled. 🌳🌊
We then crossed the busy road and wandered through the quieter back streets before reaching the pedestrianised area. Rather than rushing around, we stopped for a little break and let Ella simply watch the world go by, taking everything in at her own pace. πŸ‘€πŸΎ

We then watched Ella, not the clock. ⏰ As soon as we saw she was beginning to find things a little too much, we headed back before she reached her threshold. We returned to the car via the opposite side of the river, giving her another peaceful riverside walk to finish the day. πŸŒΏπŸ’•
The result? A happy, relaxed dog and a successful day out for all of us! πŸŽ‰πŸΆ

A little planning, understanding your dog's individual needs and being prepared to change your plans if necessary can make a difference. Holidays don't have to be stressful – they really can be enjoyable for everyone.

Planning a holiday with your dog takes a little extra thought, but it's worth it! πŸΎπŸš—πŸ’š

For Ella, we wanted the journey to be as calm and stress-free as possible. We made sure she had a comfortable travel space in the car, with everything she needed to feel safe and relaxed. πŸΆπŸ’•

Rather than tackling the long journey to The Highlands in one go, we broke it up with a one-night stopover at a lovely farm campsite. β›Ί That meant we could all enjoy a relaxed walk, have a good night's sleep 😴 and continue our journey the following day feeling refreshed.
The result? We all arrived at our holiday destination happy, calm and ready to start our adventure – humans and dog alike! πŸŒ„β€οΈ

A little planning can make all the difference. Over the next few days I'll be sharing more of the things we did to help make Ella's holiday such a success, so keep an eye out! 😊🐾

Have you got any tips for travelling with your dog? I'd love to hear them! πŸ‘‡

Anybody who has ever lost a pet knows how heartbreaking it can be. If people say β€œit’s just a pet”, they really don’t understand.

✨ We’ve had a fabulous holiday at Loch Ness, and there have been some milestones for Ella! πŸΎπŸ’™

She found the confidence for her first proper swim πŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸ’¦ and enjoyed her first ever boat trip 🚀 on a cruise across the beautiful Loch Ness! I was proud of how well she coped. 🌟

Everything didn't just happen by chance. We carefully thought through every part of the holiday and put plans in place to make it as calm, enjoyable and stress-free as possible for Ella. πŸ₯°
Over the coming days, I will share what we did before and during our trip. Hopefully our experiences will help you plan a successful, relaxing and enjoyable holiday with your own dog too. 🐢❀️
If you have plans for a summer holiday with your dog, let me know in the comments ⬇️

🐾 Not every reaction is what it first appears to be…

Today, Ella reminded me just how important it is to look at why our dogs react, rather than simply labelling them as "reactive".

She was settled beautifully under the table outside a cafΓ© when a Bulldog approached her head-on. As it got closer, it was making loud, snorty breathing noises. To us, that's perfectly normal for some breeds. But to Ella, it sounded like growling.
She felt threatened, so she reacted. πŸ˜”

It wasn't because she's "aggressive". It wasn't because she's "naughty". She genuinely believed another dog was approaching her in a threatening way.

As trainers and owners, we need to remember that our dogs don't see and hear the world as we do. Their behaviour is communication and understanding the reason behind it is the key to helping them.

I'm incredibly proud of how far Ella has come. Moments like this aren't setbacks – they're information. They show us where we can continue to build confidence and create positive experiences. ❀️🐾

Be kind. Be patient. And always try to see the world through your dog's eyes. πŸΆπŸ’š

🌳🐾 Ending the day in style... πŸ¦†πŸ’¦

Ella decided there was only one way to finish off a lovely woodland walk... a paddle with her new feathered duck pals! πŸ˜‚πŸ¦†
Don't worry... she was far more interested in making friends than chasing them! πŸ˜‡β€οΈ They all seemed quite happy sharing the water, although I think the ducks were keeping a close eye on their new furry visitor! πŸ‘€πŸ€£

All that exploring, paddling and duck-spotting has completely worn her out and she's now fast asleep in the caravan, dreaming of her next adventure! πŸ˜΄πŸšπŸΆπŸ’š

πŸ’¦πŸΎ Ella found her inner Nessie! πŸ‰πŸ’™

This is the same girl who usually jumps over puddles because she lacks confidence around water. πŸŒ§οΈβž‘οΈπŸ’§

We've taken everything at Ella's pace, starting with just dipping her tippy toes in, then enjoying a little paddle and gradually building her confidence step by step. This evening she did something amazing... she actually had a proper swim in Loch Ness! 🌊πŸ₯ΉπŸ€©
She must be channelling her inner Nessie! πŸ‰πŸ’š

Confidence isn't built overnight. It's built through patience, trust, and allowing our dogs to progress at a pace they're comfortable with. ❀️

We'll keep building on this new-found confidence and for now, the long line will be an important safety tool whenever we're not within easy reach, ensuring Ella can explore safely without getting into difficulty.

I'm so proud of my girl! πŸ₯°πŸΎ

πŸ’™ Progress, not perfection. One small step at a time can lead to moments you never thought possible.
