Sunday morning training was a warm one, so we spent plenty of time in the shade with lots of water work to keep the dogs cool.
Both groups worked on building confidence in and around water, with differing entries, increasing distance to the retieve and delivery to hand on exit.

This weekend was a busy one.
On Saturday a group from Worcestershire Gundog Society came for some training in and around water. A mixed group of varying ability and experience. All worked well and everyone achieved some progress and went away with plenty to work on.

Sunday morning was my weekly training classes. Beginners focused on steadiness, simple retieves over a jump, water retieves with plenty of obedience in-between.
Novice group worked on blinds over distance, seen up and over a bank, holding and hunting an area.

Sunday morning training. Beginners focused on simple retrieves, blinds, splits and, as always, the importance of obedience being at the forefront of the exercises.
Novice group worked on more complex splits, blinds over distance, blind over an obstacle with the handler sending at a distance from the dog.
Both sessions finished with some retieves from and over water.

Back from my holiday and back to trainng. Sunday morning and 2 well attended groups. Beginners class focused on obedience, the back command, direction with a retrieve and the stop whistle. Finished the lesson by introducing a jump over a small fence.
Novice class worked on seen retrieves over water, split retrieve, seen followed by a blind, then seen over the fence and sent straight back for a blind. Finishing with a blind over the fence some 50 meters back.

Last Sunday training for a few weeks whilst I'm off on my holidays.
Two well attended groups. Beginners class focused on obedience, with some new young attendees at the start of their training journey I'm keen to lay the all important foundations and start them on the right path. We then moved on to some simple retrieves and steadiness.
Novice group concentrated on split retrieves, retieves with a distraction and blinds over the brow of a hill.
All dogs achieved well but have plenty to work on whilst I'm away....look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks.

Sunday training has resumed in earnest since the Christmas break. We have welcomed some new faces into the beginners group and I have enjoyed watching the progress they have already made.
A number of dogs and handlers have also progressed from the beginners to the novice group and have flourished by making the step up.
I look forward to spring and summer of training and watching dogs and handlers progress.

It's only been a week but already the shooting season seems a distant memory....
The 2025/2026 season was a busy one for me:
13 shootover days
4 days shooting at field trails
Judging at 6 field trials
Running my own dog in 7 open trials including the RKC HPR Championships
Competing in The St Hubertus Cup
7 days picking up on a local shoot
2 x beaters days
6 days shooting over my own dog
10 days stalking
Not to mention the numerous 1-2-1 lessons and group training sessions.
Once again I have been able to offer those who train with me regularly throughout the year the opportinity to work their dogs on live game on shootover days, and it has been a privilege to see both dogs and handlers progress in their field craft.
I would like to give a special mention to the keepers/land owners who have so generously afforded me the ability to provide these training opportunities and have also facilitied our sport by accommodating numerous field trials. Thank you Nick Wade and the Honiley Shoot and Stuart Eborall (Warwickshire Wild Game) at Alscot Park - looking forward to returning next season. 😀
I'd like to also give a thank you to all who give their time to help and support at field trials, and in particular the hard working field trial secretaries, without whom a large part of our sport would fail to existing. I urge all those entering trials to please be kind......it's a voluntary role which involves a lot of hard work and stress.
As we head into spring and summer I am looking forward to more training and helping handlers progress with their dogs, whether that be in group sessions, days organised by various HPR clubs or 1-2-1 lessons arranged on a individual basis.

Sunday I took a trip to North Wales for a training session with the Hireathog Hunt Point Retrieve Association. A group of dogs and handlers of varying abilities and stages in their training journey. Each exercise was tailored to each pair so all learnt and achieved.
Thank you for the invite 😊

Sunday morning training and again two full classes again. Beginners group worked on obedience, recall with distraction and we started to introduce stop and direction whilst on a retieve. The novice class started with obedience and steadiness then moved on blinds and then dummies thrown out of sight with a blind behind.
