🐢 Why Do Puppies Bite? 🦷

One of the most common things new puppy owners struggle with is biting. Those sharp little teeth can hurt, but puppy biting is a completely normal part of development.

Puppies bite because they are:
β€’ Teething
β€’ Playing
β€’ Exploring the world with their mouths
β€’ Overtired or overstimulated
β€’ Learning bite inhibition

What you should avoid:
❌ Smacking
❌ Shouting
❌ Alpha rolling
❌ Punishing normal puppy behaviour

Instead, focus on teaching your puppy what TO do:
βœ”οΈ Redirect onto toys or chews
βœ”οΈ Reward calm behaviour
βœ”οΈ Keep training positive
βœ”οΈ Give your puppy enough sleep and downtime
βœ”οΈ End play calmly if biting starts

A lot of puppies actually bite more when they are tired or overexcited, just like an overtired toddler.

Consistency, patience, and guidance are key. Puppies are not being β€œbad” β€” they are learning πŸ’›

🌑️ HOT WEATHER & DOG SAFETY πŸΆβ˜€οΈ

As temperatures rise, please remember our dogs cope with heat very differently to us. What feels β€œwarm” to us can quickly become dangerous for them.

βœ… SAFE:
β€’ Early morning or late evening walks
β€’ Plenty of fresh water available at all times
β€’ Shade and cool resting areas
β€’ Snuffle games, enrichment, and training indoors
β€’ Cooling mats, frozen treats, and paddling pools
β€’ Checking pavement temperature with the back of your hand for 5 seconds

❌ NOT SAFE:
β€’ Midday walks in high temperatures
β€’ Hot pavements that can burn paws
β€’ Over-exercising or ball throwing in the heat
β€’ Leaving dogs in cars β€” even for minutes
β€’ Assuming β€œthey’ll stop when tired”
β€’ Ignoring excessive panting, drooling, wobbling, or lethargy

⚠️ Some dogs are at even higher risk:
Flat-faced breeds, puppies, senior dogs, overweight dogs, and thick-coated breeds.

Remember β€” skipping a walk on a hot day is NOT neglect. Heatstroke can happen fast and can be fatal.

Your dog would rather miss one walk than end up seriously ill. πŸ’›πŸΎ

Stay safe and keep those pups cool 😎

Dexter just had his last vacation, and it reminded me how important it is to remember that dachshunds are actually working dogs. ❀️🐾

They may be small, but dachshunds were bred to hunt, track, and work underground, which means they are intelligent, determined, active little dogs that need both physical exercise and mental stimulation to truly thrive.

Regular walks, sniffing time, enrichment games, and safe adventures help keep them healthy not only physically, but mentally too. Exercise supports their muscles and spine, helps manage weight, builds confidence, and gives them an outlet for the natural instincts they were bred for.

Too often people think dachshunds only need short walks because they’re small, but they are capable, energetic dogs with working instincts that still matter today. The key is safe, controlled exercise that protects their backs while still allowing them to enjoy life and use their brains.
