Halloween hazards! Keep your pups safe this season🎃👻
Keep your dogs safe, happy and stress free this spooky season!👻 Halloween can be an exciting time of year, with spooky decorations, tasty treats and lots of visitors. However, some Halloween traditions can pose hazards to our dogs.
Halloween Hazards:
Chocolate and Sweets🍬
Halloween treats can be extremely dangerous for our dogs, even in small amounts. Signs your dog might show if chocolate has been consumed: vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, drinking and urinating more than usual and excessive panting. Sweets can also be dangerous and cause potentially life threatening damage in dogs. Sweets and wrappers can cause choking or intestinal blockages if swallowed. If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, sweets or another potentially toxic treat, contact your vet immediately for advice. Remember to keep chocolate, sweets and treat bags well out of your dog's reach. Offer your dog a suitable dog-friendly treat so they don't feel left out!
Decorations and Costumes🕸️
Decorations such as fake cobwebs and plastic spiders can be tempting for our curious dogs to chew or swallow. If ingested, these items may cause choking or intestinal blockages. Electrical cables used for Halloween lights may cause electric shocks or burns if chewed. Keep small and edible looking decorations out of reach and make sure to secure electrical cables. Although dressing up your dog may seem adorable, some costumes can restrict movement, make it difficult to see or hear, or interfere with breathing. Not every dog enjoys wearing a costume, and signs of discomfort can include freezing, trying to remove the outfit, excessive panting, hiding or repeatedly scratching at it.
Open Doors and Escape Risks🐾
With trick-or-treaters arriving throughout the evening, front doors may be opened much more frequently than usual. This can create an escape route for our dogs. Even dogs who are normally well behaved may become frightened or overexcited by unfamiliar people, unusual costumes, loud voices and repeated doorbell ringing. This could cause your dog to bolt through an open doorway. Keep your dog in a secure room away from the front door during busy trick-or-treating hours and ensure your dog is wearing their collar with an identification tag.
Candles and Open Flames🕯️
Candles, pumpkins illuminated by tea lights and other open flames are popular Halloween decorations, but they can be dangerous around our curious dogs. Dogs may accidentally knock over candles with their tails, brush against them while investigating a decoration or burn themselves by getting too close. Even if a dog doesn't touch the flame, hot candle wax can cause painful burns if spilled onto their skin or paws. Keep candles and tea lights well out of your dog's reach and away from areas where they walk, play or sleep. Use battery-operated candles or LED lights as an alternative.
Trick or Treaters🎃
Halloween can be overwhelming for dogs, especially when unfamiliar people repeatedly knock on the door or ring the doorbell. The constant noise, unusual costumes, masks and sudden movements can make it difficult for our dogs to recognise people or understand what's happening, they may become frightened or defensive. Keep your dog in a quiet room away from the front door and provide a comfortable bed and familiar toys to help them settle.

By keeping dangerous treats out of reach, choosing safe decorations, securing doors and providing a calm environment, we can help prevent accidents and reduce unnecessary stress for our dogs.
