Why We Don’t Use Dry Treadmills 🐾💦
At The Suddy Dog Rehabilitation Centre, we are often asked why we choose underwater treadmills rather than dry treadmills for both rehabilitation and fitness conditioning.
The answer is simple: we believe dogs can achieve the same and often better fitness benefits with significantly less stress on their joints and bodies.
Whether a dog is recovering from injury, building fitness, improving performance, losing weight, or maintaining mobility, our goal is to strengthen them without unnecessary impact.
Unlike dry treadmills, underwater treadmills use the natural properties of water to create a safer and more effective exercise environment.
Why we prefer underwater treadmills:
✅ Reduced impact on joints through buoyancy
✅ Increased resistance for muscle development without increasing joint loading
✅ Improved cardiovascular fitness
✅ Better support for large breeds and giant breeds
✅ Excellent for sporting and working dogs needing strength and endurance training
✅ Safer weight-loss exercise for overweight dogs
✅ Reduced risk of repetitive impact-related strain
✅ Fully supervised by qualified rehabilitation professionals
For working and sporting dogs, water provides resistance in every direction, meaning muscles work harder while joints experience less concussion. This allows dogs to develop strength, stamina, and conditioning without the repeated impact associated with land-based exercise.
For rehabilitation patients, the benefits are even greater. The buoyancy of water helps support weakened limbs, encourages correct movement patterns, and allows earlier, safer return to exercise following injury or surgery.
As dogs fatigue, movement quality often deteriorates. In any conditioning programme, maintaining good biomechanics is essential. That’s why every session at The Suddy Dog Rehabilitation Centre is carefully monitored and adjusted to the individual dog’s needs by trained professionals.
We’re not interested in making dogs work harder.
We’re interested in helping them work smarter.
Whether your dog is a retired companion, a competitive athlete, a working dog, or recovering from injury, our hydrotherapy treadmill provides a controlled environment to build strength, fitness, and confidence while protecting long-term joint health.
Because every step should make your dog stronger, not wear them down.💙🐾
