Our mission is to improve the lives of pets and their owners. We are dedicated to providing quality affordable health care with compassion. We care for your pets the same way we would want our own pets to be cared for. Our Waddesdon Aylesbury veterinary surgery is small and friendly. We like to get to know our patients and our small size helps ensure our clients see familiar faces when they visit.

Although we are small, our facilities and equipment rival and exceed many larger practices. For example, we have digital x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy on site. We also have our own in house lab to allow rapid diagnosis, and anaesthetic monitoring equipment like used in human hospitals. We use fluid pumps for all patients requiring fluid therapy which is much safer. Separate cat and dog wards reduce stress for our patients. We operate on-site Monday- Friday in our purpose designed operating theatre. We have an experienced team of vets and veterinary nurses. Hart Vets Waddesdon is an RCVS accredited Small Animal Practice. Our veterinary hospital in Bicester is one of only 241 practices in the country that have met the stringent requirements set by the RCVS to be accredited as a Small Animal Veterinary Hospital. Our out of hours emergency service is provided by our own vets and nurses at our veterinary hospital in Bicester. mer Pet Safety Series – Rat & Mouse Poison ☀️

As our pets spend more time outdoors during the summer, the risk of coming into contact with rat and mouse poison can increase, which can pose a serious risk to curious pets and wildlife.

⚠️ Symptoms to watch for may include:
• Lethargy or weakness
• Pale gums
• Bleeding from the nose or gums
• Blood in urine or faeces
• Coughing or difficulty breathing
• Vomiting (sometimes with blood)
• Bruising or swelling
• Collapse or seizures (in severe cases)

Some poisons don't cause signs straight away, so even if your pet seems well, contact us immediately on 01296 651000 if you think they've been exposed. Early treatment can be lifesaving.

Please help keep pets safe by storing rodenticides securely and using them responsibly.

Summer gardens are beautiful, but the products we use to keep them looking their best can pose a serious risk to our pets.

🌱 Pesticides and insecticides can be toxic if your dog or cat walks on treated grass, licks their paws or fur, or accidentally ingests the chemicals. Even products labelled as "pet friendly" may still require pets to be kept away until the treated area is completely dry.

⚠️ Signs of poisoning include:
• Excessive drooling
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Tremors or shaking
• Weakness or lethargy
• Difficulty breathing
• Seizures

✅ Keep your pets safe by:
🐾 Keeping them away from treated lawns and gardens until it's safe to return.
🐾 Storing all garden chemicals securely out of reach.
🐾 Wiping or rinsing paws after walks if you're unsure whether an area has been treated.
🐾 Following the manufacturer's instructions carefully whenever using garden products.

☀️ Summer Pet Safety Series: Heat Stress in Dogs

Heat stress occurs when a dog can’t regulate their body temperature effectively. It can develop quickly, especially in warm or humid weather.

🐾 Signs to watch for:
Heavy panting or drooling
Slowing down or stopping on walks
Bright red gums or tongue
Weakness or wobbliness

🌡️ Prevention
Walk during cooler times of day
Bring water and offer regular breaks
Avoid overexertion in warm weather
Never leave dogs in hot cars

🚨 What to do:
Move your dog to a cool, shaded area, offer water, and cool them gradually with water. Contact a vet urgently if symptoms are severe or don’t improve quickly.

☀️ Summer Pet Safety Series: Hot Surfaces

In warm weather, many surfaces can become much hotter than the air temperature. Even on mild days, they can heat up enough to burn a dog’s paw pads within minutes.

🐾 Surfaces that can get dangerously hot:
Pavements (tarmac/asphalt)
Artificial grass (astro turf)
Sand (beaches and sandpits)
Metal surfaces (drains, manhole covers, bins, steps)
Concrete patios and driveways

✋ Quick safety check
Use the 5-second hand test:
Place the back of your hand on the surface. If you can’t comfortably hold it there for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on safely.

🌡️ Safer walking habits
Walk dogs early morning or late evening when surfaces have cooled
Stick to grass, shaded paths, or wooded areas where possible
Avoid long walks during hot spells, as surfaces can stay hot for hours even after the sun fades

🐶 Final thought
If you’re unsure, assume it’s too hot , your dog’s paws will always feel it before you do.

☀️ Summer Pet Safety Series: Picnics and BBQs

Summer BBQs and picnics are a favourite time of year, but they can pose several risks for our pets.

⚠️ Watch out for:
• Cooked bones – These can splinter and cause choking, intestinal blockages, or perforations.
• Corn cobs – One of the most common causes of intestinal obstruction in dogs, often requiring emergency surgery.
• Kebab skewers and cocktail sticks – Sharp objects that can cause serious internal injuries if swallowed.
• Fatty foods – Sausages, burgers, bacon, and other fatty leftovers can trigger stomach upsets or pancreatitis.
• Toxic foods – Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol (found in some sugar-free products), alcohol, and macadamia nuts are some of the foods that should all be kept well away from pets.
• Hot BBQs and fire pits – Curious pets can burn their noses or paws on hot grills, coals, disposable BBQs, or metal surfaces that stay hot long after cooking.

🐾 Keep food, rubbish, and BBQ equipment out of reach, discourage guests from feeding pets, and supervise curious noses around the cooking area. A little extra care can help prevent a trip to the emergency vet and keep everyone safe this summer.

Just look at this happy face! 🩷🐾

This photo was taken shortly after Ziggi's spay last week, when she'd also had her stopper pad stitched up. Despite having two procedures, she was bright, happy, and full of tail wags as she recovered.

☀️ Summer Pet Safety Series: Sunburn

Did you know pets can get sunburn too? Dogs and cats with light-coloured skin, thin coats, or hairless areas are especially at risk. White cats are particularly prone to sunburn on the ear tips and nose.

Common areas affected include the nose, ear tips, belly, and any areas with little or no fur, such as shaved patches.

🧴 If your pet is spending time outdoors, apply a pet-safe sunscreen to exposed skin, taking care to avoid the eyes and mouth. Never use human sunscreen, as some ingredients can be harmful if licked.

🌳 The best protection is prevention, provide plenty of shade, avoid the hottest part of the day, and walk dogs during the cooler morning or evening hours. If your cat enjoys being outdoors, encourage them to stay inside during the strongest midday sun.

Keeping your pet protected from the sun can help prevent painful burns and reduce the risk of long-term skin damage. 🐾☀️
