🐴 Summer Hoof Care – Keep Them Cool & Crack-Free ☀️

Hot, dry conditions can cause hooves to become brittle and more prone to cracks, chips, or even infections. Regular care helps keep them strong and healthy, all season long.

🧾 Hoof Care Checklist for Summer:

✅ Daily hoof checks for cracks, heat, or odour
✅ Regular farrier visits—don’t stretch out intervals
✅ Pick out hooves twice daily to remove debris and prevent thrush - you may need a stiff brush to remove stubborn dirt
✅ Provide balanced nutrition with adequate vitamins and mineral - biotin and zinc are some of the essentials.
✅ Moisture matters - some hoof products harden and some moisturise, it's best to discuss with your farrier or vet what your horse's hooves need
✅ Avoid standing on hard, sun-baked ground for long periods

A healthy hoof = a happy horse! 🐾

☀️ Sun Safety for Horses – Don’t Get Caught Out! 🐴

Summer sunshine can be glorious—but too much of it can pose health risks for our equine friends. From sunburn to heatstroke, a little prep can go a long way in keeping your horse safe and comfortable.

☀️ Top tips for sunny days:

• Shade access – Make sure your horse can retreat from direct sun during turnout
• Suncream for sensitive areas – Pale skin, pink noses, and white markings are all vulnerable
• Avoid peak heat – Ride early or late to dodge the mid-day scorch
• Hydration is key – Fresh water, soaked feeds, and electrolytes where needed
• Watch for sunburn or overheating – Red skin, lethargy, or rapid breathing need prompt attention

Remember, horses can overheat even in breezy British weather—especially during exercise or travel.

Let’s keep them cool, calm, and collected all summer long 🧴🐎

Happy First Day of Summer!

The long-awaited season is finally here, and it’s the perfect time to kick off those summer adventures with your horse! Whether you're hacking or enjoying the competition season, remember to keep your horse’s health a priority.

✅ Ensure your horse stays hydrated on warm days ✅ Watch for signs of heat stress (such as excessive sweating, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, muscle tremors, lethargy and dullness) and make sure they have plenty of shade and rest ✅ Pay attention to any changes in behaviour or movement.

Here’s to a safe, fun summer with your horses!

☀️ Beat the Summer Bugs – Fly Control for Your Horse 🐴

Flies and midges aren’t just a nuisance—they can cause irritation, spread disease, and trigger allergic reactions like sweet itch. Keeping them at bay is essential for your horse’s comfort and health during the warmer months.

Tips for fly protection:

Use fly rugs, masks, and fringes for physical barriers

Apply fly repellents regularly (choose equine-safe formulas)

Muck out and clear droppings daily to reduce breeding grounds

Fit fine-mesh screens on stable windows

Consider traps around paddocks

Sweet Itch signs to watch for: excessive rubbing, bald patches, broken skin, or thickened skin—usually along the mane, tail, and belly.

Let’s make summer as breezy as possible for our four-legged friends! 🐎

Many thanks to Quince and Mickey's owners for sharing these pics of them!

Here's your regular reminder!

When facing colic or injuries, knowing the right steps to take can be a lifesaver. Here are some tips to make sure you're ready:

📞Vet’s contact info: Save your vet's number and keep it easily accessible.

🚒Equine first aid kit: Maintain a well-stocked first aid kit at your yard and in your horsebox/trailer.

📋Emergency contacts: List key contacts and display this list visibly at your yard and when traveling with your horse.

🗓Transport plan: Ensure you have a dependable way to transport your horse if necessary.

🐴Practice drills: Regularly review and practice your emergency plan.

Being well-prepared can make all the difference during a crisis. Stay safe and take care of yourselves!

Kizzy has always been a horse who never turns down a meal - so when her owners noticed her storing food in her cheeks like a chipmunk, they knew something wasn’t quite right.

Typically, horses with dental discomfort might start “quidding” - dropping partially chewed food — but not Kizzy. True to her food-loving nature, she was trying to save it for later!

Now in her late 20s, Kizzy is a senior mare, and like many older horses, her teeth are showing their age. As horses get older, their teeth can begin to drift apart, creating gaps known as diastema. At the same time, the periodontal ligament - which holds each tooth in place - weakens, making the teeth loose and sore. These gaps can trap food, leading to discomfort and infection, which is exactly what happened in Kizzy’s case.

Thankfully, with a little local anaesthetic and pain relief, we were able to gently extract the problematic teeth right on the yard. This gave her remaining teeth the space and comfort to function properly again.

Here’s Kizzy after her dental work - happily tucking into her soft feeds and not wasting a single drop. She’s back to her old self, and we couldn’t be happier for her!
