24 hours after our National Racehorse week open day in association with Retraining of Racehorses and Great British Racing I have at last got round to posting some pictures taken by owners and my thanks to so many people. In excess of 200 people came ( we lost count after 200 and I forgot to activate the QR code thingy 🙈)

Almost the highlight of the day was the extremely competitive Yard Bake Off !!! All the fabulous cakes were then sold off for the charities Retraining of Racehorses and Breast Cancer Now.

It’s an incredibly emotional time for me ,as 48 hours before the day I sold my home of 4 generations . I was not being as informative as I should have been but my wonderful team of helpers / friends and owners went above and beyond. The yard was polished , the horses were polished and presented.

Year 3 of National Racehorse Week.

Please come along and meet the horses , watch demonstrations of some of the retraining processes plus Audience participation in judging horses in hand .

There will be a food truck in attendance , a disabled loo, easy wheelchair access , a tombola with lovely prizes raising money for Retraining of Racehorses and Breat Cancer Now.

It is unheard of me taking to social media to voice my disquiet over certain aspects of showing , but here we go !!

Having had a very long sabbatical from judging due to not enjoying the atmosphere , unsporting behaviour etc, plus being a bit wet and over sensitive . I have returned a much tougher stronger person thanks in no small part to being a widow and having had cancer twice. I now don’t give a damn if I offend people. It won’t be intentional. I have always judged what I like irrespective of jockey / handler .

So much has changed.
Classes are smaller .
Everyone chases Hoys qualifiers to the detriment of the wonderful county shows . Those shows appear to be dying ?
Judging decisions are whinged about on social media , what ever happened to Judges Decisions Are Final ??
I have recently been phoned up to be questioned ( read bully ) about the mark I gave an animal .
As this is happening to a senior judge what signal does it give to young judges ????

False tails 🤮 they are an abomination . I understand some might need them but not all, every single one is to heavy , they can’t lift the tail properly so are jammed in their backside and swing like clock pendulums , ugly and distracting . Why do people have to blindly follow the Australian fashion , which where I’m told it’s come from???
I love a short tail but so many are sooooo short they look like a cobs tail , utterly hideous .
Nosebands , so many on hunters are so so wide they cover the face and distract ? Throat latch , strangling them and so tight it makes the jaw look very coarse ?

Anyway rant over 🤣

Watch out competitors for a grumpy old woman for the rest of the season 😂

THERMAL IMAGING AFTERNOON

23rd May. Open invitation for anyone to come and watch the horses at Harroway being thermal image scanned. Tea coffee and cake provided! Come with an open mind and do ask questions. Starting 1pm.

I had two done out of interest and am totally convinced it is a great way of pinpointing areas of concern one feels riding, and the same things a good physio picks up on as well.

Frankium .
This wonderful pony is 29 today. Another example of the very best of New Forest breeding. His bloodlines are all Pam Harvey -Richards ,Knightwood , allthough he was bred by Jeannie Letts and my mother. His grandmother Knightwood Quicksilver was my second pony ! Frankie came to Harroway as a 3 yr old to be started and he has boomeranged back and forth to various homes since then always coming home for a few years before going off to teach a new child the ropes. Olivia broke him in and started his hunting and pony club career , we have lost count of the number of children he has started . He has done every equine activity bar polo and endurance ! Though barely 14hands , hunting for many years with the BV , Cattistock , pony club teams , a FEI pony trial , showing , it was all the same to him. He is currently teaching two tiny girls in his generous kind way . He truly is a blessing.

The third running of Our annual RoR unaffiliated show takes place next Saturday the 26th April.

All are welcome, registered or unregistered with the RoR . It is a relaxed unpressurised day with advice and help offered on all aspects of showing , be it turnout , way of going , what the judges are looking for .

The day commences at 10
Class 1. In Hand
Class 2. Ridden , to give an individual show
Class 2a Ridden , Walk and Trot only . This class is the only one open to all breeds / types for truly novice / beginner combinations .
Class 3 . Ridden , judge to ride .
Class 4. Pick your height jumping

Late entries taken cash only . Entries can be made prior via Horse Monkey RoR southwest .

Tea , coffee, biscuits , cake will be available but no catering van will be in attendance.

I’m looking for a new home on behalf of a friend , for this lovely RoR , ex flat horse, 16h 8 yr old gelding. He is now starting his retraining journey . He is a beautiful horse and a lovely model , ideally suited to open Riding horse classes as well as a top class RoR prospect for the coming season .

This is worth the longish read .

There are a few people ( dealers “retainers /rehomers “ )around who appear not to do sufficient checks , who pass these lovely horses on as quickly as possible with minimum input . It is not good for the breeds reputation to the wider horse world .

It’s that time of year again to open the doors of Harroway . Somehow in these uncertain times with dreadful misinformed articles in broadsheet newspapers, it’s imperative we keep beating the drum of positivity , that horses are treasured , loved and treated as the sentient beings we know them to be .
