With more than half of England now in drought conditions, it’s clear these hot, dry summers are becoming part of the new normal. That’s why ATR is deep into researching drought‑tolerant species like red clover and tall fescue, building mixes that hold their nerve in tough seasons.

🌿 Plants that bring life back to the soil 🪱

From fixing nitrogen to opening up tight ground, different plant species bring their own strengths, each one helping tired soils find their life again. Together, they rebuild structure, boost fertility and set the land up for healthier growth. Here are a few species worth knowing:

1. Buckwheat: Brings tired soils back to life with its fast, lively soil‑building habit. By suppressing w**ds, unlocking phosphorus and sending down an extensive fibrous root network that pushes through hard‑packed topsoils while adding quick‑breaking organic matter.
2. Clovers: Work hard beneath the surface, pulling nitrogen into the soil through its root nodules. Its deeper roots ease compaction, steady w**ds, hold the ground together and help it keep moisture in reserve.
3. Lucerne: A steady soil‑builder, fixing nitrogen, driving deep taproots through tight layers. Adding the organic matter and microbial life that help the ground find its strength again.
4. Vetch: Brings life back to tired soils, fixing nitrogen through its root nodules while building rich organic matter and steadying w**d pressure.
5. Comfrey: Sends deep taproots down to pull up buried minerals, then returns them to the surface through leafy growth that makes a rich mulch.
6. Chicory: A deep taproot down through hard‑packed layers to open the ground up, pulling trace minerals and leached nitrogen back toward the surface. While adding the organic matter that keeps soil life busy.

With more than half of England now officially classified as being in drought conditions, the challenges of the season are being felt nationwide.

As autumn approaches, it’s the ideal time to assess any drought damage, repair tired lawns and plan overseeding or new sowings while soil temperatures remain favourable. Both Red Clover and White Clover offer valuable benefits for livestock and soil health, but each has its own strengths and considerations. Here's a closer look at how they compare:

Red Clover
🌿 Nitrogen Booster: Fixes nitrogen naturally, helping to reduce fertiliser requirements.
🫚 Enhanced Soil Health: Deep tap roots improve soil structure and aid drought tolerance.
🐄 Quality Forage: Highly digestible and protein-rich, enhancing forage quality and livestock performance.
🌱 Suppresses Weeds: Competes well with w**ds and typically persists for 2–3 years, depending on the variety.
🐑 Management: Can cause bloat in cattle and fertility issues in sheep if overgrazed, so careful management is required.

White Clover

🌸 Inside Rob's Blooming Wildflower Fields 🌸

Our favourite time of year is here, when the wildflower fields are at their busiest. Rob has had a fantastic season producing strong crops across the board, including some of our rarer and more specialised wildflower varieties. It’s always rewarding to see months of hard work come into bloom.

Many wildflowers are giving up early this year, rushing to throw out a handful of seed before they die back, rather than growing on to full maturity. By the time we reach harvest, far fewer plants have carried their seed to term. Meaning lighter yields across the board. With stock tightening and demand holding firm, prices will naturally lift as we head into the busy season.

Rob’s irrigation system has become a lifeline in these dry spells. Once unheard of for wildflowers, it’s now been needed in four of the last six years, showing a clear sign of the climate shifting. It’ll never match real rainfall, but it’s keeping plants alive long enough to set seed. Systems like this either draw from deep reserves 10–15 metres down or pull from a certified lake source, both tightly regulated to protect the land.

🌳 The hidden cooling power of urban trees 🌳

With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect moment to show how trees act as natural refrigerators for our towns. Planted in the right places, they can cool the air by 2–8ºC, easing the pressure of rising heat and that cooling power shows up in many ways:

💧 Evapotranspiration: Trees draw up water and release it as a fine vapour through their leaves and that gentle misting cools the air around them.

🕶️ Canopy Shade: Trees cast cooling shade over the ground and nearby buildings, cutting heat and easing energy use. When planted in the right spots, they can even trim air‑conditioning needs by around 30%.

♨️ Less Heat Trapped: Where concrete and asphalt store heat, trees stay cool, helping to steady temperatures across our towns.

The Lancet’s latest study shows that reaching 30% tree cover could prevent 1 in 3 summer deaths caused by the urban heat island effect, a powerful reminder of what trees can do.
