Another #Heatwave is on its way! ⚠️🌡☀️

As the temperatures across the UK start to climb again and with an amber "extreme heat" alert issued by the Met Office, we want to remind owners to be mindful of their pets during the hot days.

Heat stroke can affect many animals, so we urge pet owners to learn the key signs to look for.

Keep our helpful infographic to hand to ensure you know the signs of heatstroke.

🐇 🐇 🐇

In the warm summer months, the risk of flystrike increases amongst our rabbit population.

Flystrike occurs when a particular type of fly lays its eggs on or around a rabbit's rear end, which hatch into maggots. These maggots then begin to eat the rabbit's flesh, often with fatal results.

TYPICAL SIGNS OF FLYSTRIKE INCLUDE…

⚠️ Not drinking or eating

⚠️ Lethargic and noticeably quiet

⚠️ A strong smell from their living area

⚠️ Digging into a small corner of their living area

⚠️ Open sores or visible maggots on the skin

TO PREVENT YOUR RABBIT FROM GETTING FLYSTRIKE, YOU CAN…

🐰 Examine your rabbit for symptoms daily

🐰 Clean your rabbit's living space regularly and ensure normal faeces are being passed

🐰 If your rabbit has a wound, keep it dry and clean

🐰 Speak with your vet about the preventative treatments available

🐰 Feed your rabbit a fibrous diet that consists mainly of hay or grass to aid their digestive process, which will prevent droppings from sticking to their fur

🐰 We advise supporting your rabbit to maintain a happy and healthy weight, as overweight rabbits will find it harder to clean themselves properly

Please get in touch with us immediately if you suspect your rabbit has the condition. 🦟

It's #NationalLostPetPreventionMonth, and today, we want to share the importance of having the right accessories to keep your pet safe!

Under The Control of Dogs Order 1992, every dog in public must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved on the collar or on a tag attached to it. We also recommend including your phone number on the dog collar or tag. It is important to remember, even if your dog is microchipped, they still need to wear a collar. If you break this law, you could be fined up to £2,000.

It’s vital that their collar fits snugly around their neck without being too tight. You should be able to get one finger under the collar for cats and two fingers for dogs.

Summer is well and truly here! 🌞
It’s important that while we are basking in the heat, we consider the impact it has on our beloved four-legged friends! 🐾
The warm weather aids the growth of bugs and bacteria, leading to a host of common summer ailments in pets, including fleas, worms and flystrike, so it’s important to know how to protect them!

🐶 🐱

It’s #NationalLostPetPreventionMonth, so today, we want to discuss the importance of neutering your pet.

Did you know… neutering can have significant preventative healthcare benefits for your pet, including an important step in ensuring your pet doesn’t wander or get lost?

When pets aren’t neutered, they have a higher tendency to be more aggressive and seek out others because of natural behaviour.

If you haven’t neutered your pet or are looking for some advice, visit our website for more information >> https://bit.ly/3RGKQP8

The infamous 'five second rule' can save your dog from painful burns during a walk on a hot summer's day! 🌞

✋ Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you cannot hold it there for five seconds, it's too hot to walk your dog 🐾 – trust us, your dog will be grateful you know this trick!

☀️ 🌡⚠️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING ⚠️🌡☀️

Pets rely on their owners to keep them safe and comfortable in the hot weather, even more so during periods of extreme heat. As temperatures push 40°C 🌡️ in parts of the UK over the next few days, it's crucial to take extra care of your pets.

Here are some suggestions of what to do with your pets on a hot day; please also make yourself aware of the signs of heatstroke to keep your pets safe. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, remove your pet from the hot environment immediately and call us.

This #GuineaPigAppreciationDay, we wanted to highlight some key needs for guinea pigs to live a happy, healthy life and some interesting facts. 💖

🐹 Guinea pigs, just like humans, get lonely and shouldn't be kept alone. They're happiest kept in pairs or small groups, but it's also important to make sure they have enough space to play and run around!

🐹 They also need a high fibre diet supplemented with vitamin C, as they lack the enzyme needed to synthesise vitamin C and can only store it for short periods.

Did you know?
🐹 Guinea pigs have four toes on their front feet and three on their hind feet.
🐹 A female guinea pig is called a sow; the male is a boar and babies are pups.
🐹 Guinea pigs secrete a white substance from their eyes that they use to wash with.
🐹 Baby guinea pigs are born fully formed with fur and teeth.
🐹 Guinea pigs make lots of noises; the most well-known is the 'wheek.'

Have you got any guinea pig facts you can share with us?

PET PROOFING YOUR PLACE 🐶

With July marking National Pet Loss Prevention Month, we wanted to share some top tips for securing your home and garden. 🏡🔐

🏡 Whether you’re about to get a pet or have had one for years, it’s always worth doing a sweep of the garden to ensure your fence is not only tall enough that your pet can’t jump over it (ideally 6ft tall), but that it also goes deep enough into the earth so your pet can’t dig their way out.

🏡 Ensure you check your garden after any storms or high winds to ensure there hasn’t been any damage.

🏡 Always keep gates closed when your dog is out in the garden.

Darcy dog woke up this morning a bit worse for wear & swollen so was kindly seen by the team at Boundary Vets. Thank you to Nikki & the reception team today for giving a lot of treats & fuss (plus the fab medical care of course).

Teeny Tiny Pixel (3kgs) is one of your clients. He qualified for three events at the UK Agility Grand Finals which took place over the past couple of days. While we weren't placed, he did his best 😊 The video is of us getting a clear round in the Steeplechase. Not fast enough to go through. He needs longer legs!
If you know Finn you will know that him celebrating his 15th birthday today is a bit of a miracle. 🐕🎂
If you walk your dogs at the gravel pit at the end of Barton Lane (not the Radley Pit) take care, we walked there this morning and saw an adder, luckily we saw it before the dogs did. It was on the track and then hid in the long grass.
Had such a great visit at BoundaryVets yesterday evening. Was able to go in with my Malka who has conjunctivitis at the moment, as apparently as of this week one owner who feels comfortable can go in with the pet. Great to chat with the lovely vet and just check on how Mal is doing generally after a year of handing her over outside the door, albeit for the best possible reasons. Staff lovely as always and best possible care as usual for my best friend. Thanks Boundary! 👋
I highly recommend Boundary Vets. Their staff are so very caring and 100% professional. They listen carefully to any concerns and ask pertinent questions. During the recent spay and post operative care of our dog they were most attentive and kept us fully informed throughout.
Merry xmas to u all from lexie
Finn on his 14th birthday (1st September 2020) a real milestone for this little chap. 💜
Today is Finn's 14th birthday. If you know Finn you will know how amazing it is for him to have reached this age. 💜🐾🐕
A massive thank you to Boundary Vets today, especially to Lucy who went above and beyond for Lexi. One sleepy but not stressed dog today! Feels like we’re forever at the vets with our 3 at the moment but can’t fault Lucy’s care and thoughtfulness. Thank you xx
Brilliant service at vets today, all staff have a true understanding of how precious our fur babies are to us. Excellent service given by all staff, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. ,♥️🐾
Due to the "virus" I have been unable to speak to anyone for a repeat prescription of Rimadyl for my dog Mouse Sutcliffe. It seems to help but she is struggling and I'd like to be sure she isn't in too much pain. Which brings me to my next question, you can see from her medical chart. She is 13 years old and has breast tumours that have grown very large. I am wondering if it would cause her any further harm to give her a CBD oil specifically for dogs? I have approximately 4 tablets left so, please contact me at 01235 414 335 as soon as possible

Thank you for looking after us again this year, we have both been very poorly. Merry Christmas from Millie & Poppy Litchfield.
