Rehabilitation in equine medicine has changed enormously over the last years 🐴

Many Altano clinics now work with modern rehab equipment and therapy concepts to support horses during recovery and rebuilding. One example is the aquatrainer 💧, which allows controlled movement with reduced strain on joints and structures.

Depending on the case, these therapies can help horses regain strength, improve mobility and carefully return to work step by step.

What matters most is choosing the right approach for the individual horse - because no recovery journey is exactly the same.

Scintigraphy is one of the most specialised imaging techniques used in equine medicine — especially when lameness or performance issues cannot be clearly explained through standard diagnostics🔬

Unlike X-rays or CT scans, scintigraphy does not primarily show anatomical structures. Instead, it highlights areas with increased bone activity and metabolism.

For the examination, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the horse’s bloodstream. 🩸 This substance accumulates in regions where the body is actively reacting — for example because of inflammation, stress reactions, overload or tiny bone injuries. A special gamma camera then makes these areas visible.

This can be especially valuable in:

➡️ unclear or shifting lameness cases
➡️ performance problems without obvious findings
back or pelvic pain
➡️ stress-related bone changes
➡️ complex orthopaedic cases involving multiple limbs

One of the biggest advantages is that the entire horse can be assessed systematically, helping vets localise problems that may otherwise remain hidden.

Scintigraphy is usually not the first step in diagnostics. But in the right cases, it can provide crucial answers and guide the next treatment decisions. 🐴

🇬🇧 The 16-year-old pinto horse Skywalker was presented at the Gessertshausen Equine Clinic with a rapidly growing lump on the bridge of his nose. 🐴 A CT scan revealed an air-filled lesion approximately 12 cm long and 4 cm high above the upper nares.

The company which offers a resorbable osteosynthesis system was consulted for the operation. 👨‍⚕️ This enabled the defect to be covered with a resorbable plate following surgical removal of the protruding bone under general anaesthesia and partial removal of the upper turbinate. This was warmed in a water bath, allowing it to be individually moulded to the contour of the skull. The plate was secured at the edges using resorbable pins. This ensured the defect was optimally treated. 🙏

And Skywalker? He has recovered very well. The plate now serves as a foundation for new bone growth. 3 months after the procedure, the clinic is very satisfied with the result. The implants are expected to dissolve within

Good veterinary care depends on people who know they can rely on each other 🧡

In our clinics, no one works alone. Treatments, diagnostics, surgeries, daily care - everything works because different people with different skills come together and support one another.

Often, it’s the small things that make the biggest difference: knowing what your colleague needs without many words, stepping in when things get busy, staying calm together in difficult moments.

That’s what teamwork looks like for us. And our patients benefit from it every single day. 🐴

Back to comfortable movement – one step at a time 🐴

Meet Bellico, a patient that was struggling with discomfort caused by constriction in the fetlock area.

Through a fetlock annular ligament surgery, the pressure could be relieved, allowing the tendons to move freely again and significantly improving his comfort and mobility.

In this clip, we take you through the procedure and explain what happens during surgery. 💙

Sometimes, it’s a small structure making a big difference, and the right intervention can change everything. 👌

We never forget how much trust comes with every horse that enters our clinics. 🐴

For many owners, these horses are family members, partners, lifelong companions. 🙏 And we know how difficult it can be to hand them over - especially during uncertain moments.

That’s why care for us goes far beyond treatment plans and medical procedures. It means paying attention in every situation, checking in constantly, noticing small changes, staying calm, being patient and making sure every horse feels as safe and comfortable as possible.

Whether during the night shift, after surgery or simply during a quiet walk back to the stable: someone is always watching over them. ❤️

Routine procedure - built on precision 🔬

Chip removal via arthroscopy is a common procedure in equine surgery.

But what may seem routine requires careful planning, experience, and attention to detail at every step.
From diagnosis to surgery and aftercare, every movement is precise. Because small details make a big difference in recovery and long-term soundness.

In this reel, we take you behind the scenes of a procedure that combines routine with expertise. 👌

In the operating room, everything has to come together 🙏

Every procedure follows a plan, every step is coordinated. And every person in the room knows exactly what to do.

Whether in special cases or in routine surgeries, we stay focused, we pay attention to the details, and we rely on each other.

Everyone involved shares the same priority: the horse. 🐴

Inspiring the next generation of equine veterinarians 👏

At the ESM Rehab Center in Scottsdale, AZ, Dr. Gabrielle GrandPre welcomed 4th-year veterinary students from her alma mater, Midwestern University, for a hands-on learning experience.

From lameness exams and diagnostic imaging to bloodwork analysis and open Q&A sessions, the day was designed to be practical, interactive, and engaging.
What stood out most: the enthusiasm of the students and Dr. Gabrielle GrandPre’s passion for teaching and sharing her knowledge.

Their feedback said it all: one of the most valuable learning experiences they’ve had. 🙏

For us, this is what the Altano Spirit is all about — advancing medicine, supporting young professionals and inspiring others to discover the opportunities within equine practice. 🐴
