Pure focus & attention 🐴

During surgery on the six-year-old gelding Bellico at Pferdeklinik am Kottenforst, the team not only performed a fetlock annular ligament procedure, but also removed a sarcoid at the same time.

For the removal of this sarcoid, the team chose a laser surgery procedure. The laser enables precise removal of the affected tissue while also helping to treat the surrounding area, where small satellite cells may remain. This can lower the risk of the sarcoid returning compared to traditional removal with a scalpel. Another benefit of laser surgery is that the wound can often be left open, allowing natural healing and supporting a smooth recovery. 🐴✨

Restoring vision with a lens implant 👁️

When a cataract threatens a horse’s vision, advanced surgery can make all the difference.

A cataract is an opacity of the eye’s lens that can impair a horse’s vision. 🐴 While some cataracts are present from birth, others develop following trauma or chronic inflammation. Depending on their severity, they can significantly impair a horse’s vision and ability to perform.

The only treatment that can restore vision is phacoemulsification, a highly specialised surgical procedure requiring advanced ophthalmic equipment, expert surgical skills and carefully managed anaesthesia. 👩‍⚕️

At Scone Equine Group, Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery Dr Jessica Partlow and Consultant veterinary ophthalmology specialist Dr Matt Annear perform this advanced procedure, helping horses regain their vision and get back to enjoying life to the fullest. 🙏

Saving Mare & Foal 🐴

A pregnant thoroughbred mare was referred to Avenel Equine Hospital, part of the Altano Group, with signs of acute colic. Initial examination and ultrasound revealed dilated loops of small intestine. Despite medical treatment, her pain continued to increase, making exploratory surgery necessary.

During surgery, a severely damaged section of the small intestine was identified, removed, and the healthy ends were successfully reconnected. 🙏

Following surgery, the mare recovered well and quickly resumed eating and passing manure without post-operative complications. Serial foetal ultrasound examinations confirmed that both the foal and placenta remained healthy throughout her recovery.

Just five days after surgery, the mare was discharged to continue her rehabilitation at home. Today, both mare and her unborn foal continue to do well. 🧡

🇩🇪 Intensivmedizin für unsere kleinsten Patienten 🍼

Nicht jedes Fohlen startet problemlos ins Leben. Manche benötigen vom ersten Tag an eine intensive medizinische Betreuung.

Zu unseren Intensivpatienten gehören unter anderem frühgeborene Fohlen, unterentwickelte (dysmature) Fohlen, Fohlen mit Sepsis oder dem Fehlanpassungssyndrom („Dummy Foal Syndrome“).

Je nach Erkrankung kommen Fohlenboxen, Brustlagerungshilfen (Sternal Support), Infusionen, Sauerstoff- oder Ernährungssonden zum Einsatz. Gleichzeitig werden die kleinen Patienten rund um die Uhr überwacht und betreut.

Das Fohlen in diesem Video zeigte Symptome des Fehlanpassungssyndroms sowie neurologische Auffälligkeiten. Nach intensiver Behandlung konnte es wieder aufstehen, bei der Stute trinken und schließlich gemeinsam mit seiner Mutter gesund nach Hause zurückkehren.

Solche Geschichten erinnern uns jeden Tag daran, warum sich jeder Einsatz lohnt. 🐴

🇬🇧 Intensive care for our youngest patients 🍼

Not every foal has an easy start in life. Some require intensive veterinary care from the very beginning.

Our neonatal intensive care patients include premature and dysmature foals, foals with sepsis, and those suffering from Dummy Foal Syndrome.

Depending on their condition, treatment may involve neonatal stalls, sternal support, fluid therapy, oxygen supplementation or assisted feeding. Throughout their stay, every foal is monitored around the clock.

This foal showed signs of neonatal maladjustment syndrome (dummy foal syndrome) along with neurological abnormalities.

Thanks to intensive care, it was able to stand, nurse independently and eventually return home healthy together with its mare.

These are the moments that remind us why every effort is worth it. 🐴

This big 17.2hh Warmblood, weighing 650kg, was referred to Scone Equine Hospital by Dr Molly Renowden from Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre for evaluation of intra-articular bone fragments in the stifle. 🐴

Radiographs and ultrasound examinations revealed multiple large osteochondral fragments affecting both stifles. Dr Jessica Partlow performed arthroscopic surgery to remove the loose bone fragments from both the right and left stifles. 👩‍⚕️

Following surgery, the horse recovered well from anaesthesia and remained hospitalised overnight for postoperative treatment and monitoring with his gentle giant nature winning our nursing team’s hearts.

We look forward to following his return to performance! 💪

When a small wound becomes a big challenge 🐴

A wound on a horse’s leg may look minor at first — but sometimes, deeper structures are affected.

When 3-year-old gelding Jack suffered a severe wound to his right front pastern, his owners acted quickly and brought him to Scone Equine Hospital.

What appeared to be a simple injury turned out to be much more serious, involving damage to his tendon sheath and flexor tendon. Jack required surgery, intensive care and a long road to recovery.

Today, we are delighted to share that Jack has made an excellent recovery and is back home, continuing his rehabilitation journey with his owner. 🧡

Jack’s story is a powerful reminder that early intervention, specialised care and a dedicated team can make all the difference. A huge thank you to the team at Scone Equine Hospital and everyone involved in giving Jack the best possible chance.

We wish Jack and his owner all the very best for the future. 🐎
