🚨 URGENT COMMUNITY HEALTH ALERT: Feline Panleukopenia in Oxford County 🚨
Oxford County Feline Wellness & Outreach Programs is issuing an urgent warning to all cat owners, fosters, and independent rescuers across our community.
Our nursery is currently managing a confirmed and heartbreaking outbreak of Feline Panleukopenia (often called feline parvovirus or "panleuk").
Panleukopenia is a highly contagious, severe, and frequently fatal viral illness that primarily strikes unvaccinated kittens and young cats.
What you need to know to protect your pets:
It travels on your shoes: This virus is incredibly resilient. It can live on surfaces, grass, and dirt for up to a year. You can easily step in the virus outside and carry it right into your living room on your shoes or clothes, infecting indoor-only cats. If
Vaccines are life-saving: The core FVRCP vaccine is highly effective at preventing this disease. If your adult cat or kitten is behind on their boosters, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Watch for symptoms: If your cat or kitten shows sudden lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, severe diarrhea, or is sitting "hunching" over their water bowl, seek emergency veterinary care instantly. Do not wait.
Our Current Status:To protect the community and save the kittens currently fighting for their lives in our care, Oxford County Feline Wellness & Outreach Programs has implemented a strict lockdown. We are completely pausing all cat intakes and adoptions for at least the next 14 days.
How You Can Help Us Save Lives:Fighting this virus requires round-the-clock supportive care, intensive veterinary medications, fluids, and an enormous amount of medical PPE.
