Hearing that a cat is FIV or FeLV positive can sound scary, but it really doesn’t have to be 🐾

FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is often spoken about alongside FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus). FIV spreads primarily through deep bite wounds, while FeLV can spread through direct contact with infected saliva, nasal secretions, urine, or f***s — usually through grooming, biting, or sharing food and litter boxes.

FIV and FeLV positive cats can live normal, happy, healthy lives with proper care. FeLV is a more complex virus and may require more attentive care than FIV.

FIV and FeLV only affect cats and cannot be transmitted to humans. However, because there is still a risk of transmission between cats, FIV or FeLV positive cats should either be the only cat in the home or live with other cats who have the same virus.

An FIV or FeLV diagnosis doesn’t change their personality or ability to love 🐾 Help break the stigma and give a cat the chance at a happy, loving home 🧶
