🐾 What Does My Adoption Fee Help Cover?

Before a dog is ready for adoption through BTRC, a lot happens behind the scenes.

Every dog receives a veterinary examination and is individually evaluated to determine what care they need. Depending on age, medical history, and veterinary recommendations, this may include vaccinations (core vaccines, plus Leptospirosis, Lyme, and Bordetella), f***l testing, heartworm testing, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, microchipping, bloodwork, and more.

All dogs are spayed or neutered before adoption unless a veterinarian recommends otherwise. Many also require dental work, medications, supplements, prescription diets, diagnostic imaging, specialist consultations, or treatment for existing medical conditions.

Adoption fees help offset a portion of these expenses, but they rarely cover the full cost of care.

But rescue is about more than veterinary care.

Dogs spend time in foster homes where they decompress, learn routines, receive training and support, and are carefully observed so we can better understand their personalities, needs, and ideal homes. Volunteers coordinate transport, foster care, veterinary appointments, training sessions, medical records, adoption applications, reference checks, home visits, contracts, and post-adoption support.

Before adoption, individualized information for each dog is also prepared, including a Homecoming Guide tailored to their specific needs. We outline the dog’s routines, diet, medications, and favourite things, along with a list of the supplies they’ll be coming home with, so adopters can be ready for their new family member’s arrival.

When you adopt from BTRC, you’re not just opening your home to a dog. You’re helping make rescue possible for the dogs still waiting for their second chance. ❤️

We have some awesome news – Pepper from our ‘Spice Rack’ litter has been adopted, and his new name is Odin!

Though he may be small, his family says that Odin’s incredibly brave and full of adventure, and his hearing impairment doesn’t slow him down one bit. He explores, plays, cuddles and just loves to ‘dog.’

Odin has already formed the sweetest bond with his Boston Terrier brother, Louis, who is showing him the ropes, and he’s deemed his senior Chiweenie sister, Kalie, his favourite snuggle buddy. ❤️

His mom says, “We love that Louis, who is only a year and a half old himself, now has a brother to grow up with and teach lil Odin all of his tuxedo gremlin ways! Thank you so much, BTRC, for trusting us with this precious little soul.”

Congrats to Odin and family! 🎉

🐾 Did You Know?

Every Boston Terrier carries a little piece of history in their DNA.

Early Boston Terriers – then known as Boston Bull Terriers – were often larger, leggier, and more varied in appearance than the dogs we know today.

In fact, the original Boston Terrier Club of America breed standard accepted a wider range of colours, including liver (red), fawn, and blue. Early Bostons also came in a variety of marking patterns, including dogs known as “splashes” – those with a predominance of white. Historical dogs such as Red Jacket displayed these striking markings. While colours and markings were standardized over time, the genes behind them did not simply disappear.

Early Boston Terriers also displayed a much wider variety of tail types. Historical photographs show some influential Boston Terriers, including Tabor’s Brandy, with longer, straighter tails than we commonly see today. One early stud advertisement even proudly described a Boston Terrier named Dalesman as having a “screw tail” – suggesting the trait was still distinctive enough to be worth mentioning. As breeders worked to establish a more consistent breed type, naturally shorter tails became increasingly desirable and were selectively bred for. While most Boston Terriers today are born with short tails, the genes for longer tails can still occasionally reappear generations later.

That’s why purebred Boston Terriers occasionally surprise us with “throwback” traits that resemble their early ancestors. Longer tails, a leggier build, historical coat colours, unusual markings, and other old-fashioned features can sometimes reappear generations later.

So, the next time you see a Boston Terrier with a longer tail or a look that’s a little outside the modern standard, remember: it might be a mix. Or it might just be a living piece of Boston Terrier history. 😉

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of one of our beloved alumni – Motley – at the age of 18. His long life was a powerful testament to unconditional love and the life-changing impact of a rescue dog.

Motley’s journey with BTRC began in July 2010, when we were contacted about a young dog (originally named Pooh Bear) in a U.S. shelter, just one day away from being euthanized. He was described as incredibly sweet and gentle – but the shelters were full, and there was nowhere for him to go.

Within days, Motley made his way north, and BTRC picked him up for transport in a parking lot just off the highway. Little did he know, these two volunteers, Colleen and Lisa, would eventually become his forever moms. ❤️

Colleen and Lisa opened their hearts and welcomed Motley in October 2010. Motley embraced life fully. Despite a knee surgery and a lingering quirky gait, he never let anything slow him down! While he enjoyed neighbourhood watch and soaking up the sun, what he loved most was basking in the adoration of his family.

Over the years, Motley experienced both companionship and loss. He shared his life with two canine siblings – Domino and Boomer. And then, in 2018, came an unimaginable loss within his family. His mom Lisa passed away.

While Motley grieved, his mom also grieved, but he was always a constant presence and her source of comfort. He was a pup whose love never wavered, and he’s the reason his mom was able to move forward. She says, “I genuinely believe that he saved my life at that time.”

When Motley became an only dog, he also became his mom’s sidekick. “I just want people to know what a wonderful dog Motley was and what a great ambassador he was for BTRC…he was seen as a throwaway dog, but BTRC did not hesitate and gave him a second chance, and he savoured every minute of it for almost 16 more years. Rest in peace, my sweet boy; I will love you forever.”

And to think, if he remained in the shelter, he never would have had this chance.

Run free, sweet Motley. You will always be remembered and forever missed. 💖🌈🐾

BTRC alum Daisy has some very exciting news to share…she’s officially a big girl! 🎉

That’s right – Daisy has turned one, so her birthday is now celebrated in years, not months!

Her three young human sisters and her brother, BTRC alum Jimmy, made sure her special day was nothing short of spectacular. A birthday crown, photoshoot, gifts and a special birthday cookie – they pulled out all the stops! Of course, they knew Daisy needed to be treated like the queen she is. ❤️

🐾 When You Foster...

The foster home is a vital part of rescue.

Because BTRC does not operate a shelter, every dog that comes into our care lives in a volunteer foster home. But fostering is about far more than simply providing a place to stay.

Foster homes provide safety, stability, and patience during what is often one of the most difficult transitions in a dog’s life.

Some dogs simply need a safe place to land. Others arrive needing frequent veterinary appointments, complex medication schedules, post-surgical recovery or behavioural training and support.

Dogs can be confused, overwhelmed, or frightened. They don’t understand where they are, who these new people are, or what is expected of them.

There is no pressure. Fosters take things slowly and allow dogs to adjust at their own pace.

The dog you meet on day one is often not the same dog you know a few weeks later. As they begin to feel safe, their personality starts to emerge. Confidence grows. Habits develop. Preferences appear. Quirks surface. Sometimes challenges do, too.

Foster homes help us understand who each dog truly is.

They teach routines, provide training and guidance, monitor medical and behavioural progress, and help us learn what type of home will allow that dog to thrive.

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress.

Every medication given, every vet appointment attended, every training session completed, every middle-of-the-night potty break, and every ounce of patience helps move that dog one step closer to a successful future.

And somewhere along the way, foster families almost always fall in love. How could they not?

Sometimes the fit is so wonderful that they want to adopt and make the dog a permanent member of their family.

More often, they say goodbye with a few tears but a full heart. The goodbye is never easy, but there is comfort in knowing they helped make a happy ending possible. They watched a dog blossom and find the family they were meant for. And there’s room to help the next dog in need…

Foster homes don’t just save lives.

They help rebuild them. ❤️

Please welcome Dharma and Dori to BTRC. ❤️🐾

Dharma is an approximately 5-year-old Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix, and Dori is an approximately 2-year-old Boston Terrier.

Based on the information available to us, both girls have been used for breeding. Because there was a possibility that one or both could be pregnant, they were immediately seen by a veterinarian upon arrival in our care. Thankfully, neither appears to be expecting puppies (unless they’re less than four weeks along).

While this initial visit focused on determining whether either girl was pregnant, both Dharma and Dori will be returning to the veterinarian soon for their full intake vetting and all medical care they require.

So far, both girls have shown themselves to be sweet, affectionate, happy companions who are settling nicely into foster care. They are currently bunking with BTRC alumni Albert (Bertie) and his brother Moose, and by all reports the girls are having a great time with the boys. (Bertie and Moose have already done their part for population control.) 😉

We’re looking forward to getting to know Dharma and Dori better and learning more about their personalities, quirks, and what they’ll be looking for in their future homes.

For now, we’re simply grateful that Dharma and Dori are safe, comfortable, and beginning their next chapter with BTRC.

The girls are currently in Leduc, Alberta and are not yet available for adoption.
