June is here, and that means it’s time for Underdog’s annual Pride Month series. We’re kicking the door open with glitter on our boots, pride in our hearts, and absolutely no intention of turning the volume down.

Buckle up, because for the next 30 days, this page is going to be unapologetically, gloriously, rainbow-powered gay.

Expect q***r history. Q***r education. Q***r quotes. Q***r joy. Q***r frustration. Q***r celebration. And q***r ranting.

Underdog & Co. is trans-owned, q***r-operated, and quite definitely the gayest grooming salon in town. Not accidentally, either. We built this place with intention, authenticity, and just the right amount of q***r audacity. Proudly.

For those who are new here, my name is Bailey (they/he), and this series exists because q***r people deserve to see themselves reflected in the communities, businesses, and spaces they support.

Pride has never been just a party. It’s protest. It’s resilience. It’s community. It’s refusing to shrink yourself to make other people comfortable.

So all month long, we’re making space for the stories, voices, and conversations that got us here.

Being trusted with your dogs is never something we take lightly. This community means everything to us, and this little shop growing into what it is today still feels like a dream I get to live every day.

This team isn’t just a team, they’re family… to me, and to your dogs. The slow, gentle, one-on-one care, the extra cuddles, the patience… that’s the heart of everything we do. It’s truly an honour to be your groomer and your dogs safe space.

I wanted to share something personal with you all. My heart and soul, Cake, passed away peacefully at home, in my arms on Saturday at 5:54pm

For those of you who knew of him, you already understand what he meant to me. He wasn’t just “the shop dog.” He was my constant, my shadow, my steady presence through some of the hardest chapters of my life.

He came to work every day, always just in the back, in his kennel. Most of you never actually saw him, but you knew he was there. He’d make his presence known in his own way, reminding you that he was part of this space and a part of our days.

He was calm, confident, stoic… and also completely committed to being exactly where he shouldn’t be whenever given the chance. And somehow, even after losing a leg, he just got faster. More efficient. And unwilling to slow down for anything or anybody.

The shop will feel very different without him.

I also want to say thank you in advance for your patience. If my responses are a little slower, or if I need some extra time getting back to you, I truly appreciate your understanding. And if you come in and it feels a little quieter without him in the background, or I get a bit emotional, thank you for holding space for that too.

I know you understand - I really do - but I still want to say it: this is hard for me.

Thank you for loving him, even from a distance. It meant everything. He meant everything.

A Note About Pricing 🐾

This isn’t our favourite kind of post to write… but it’s an important one.

Like many small businesses, we’ve been feeling the steady rise in costs across everything that keeps our space running. We’ve held off on making any changes for as long as possible, but we’ve reached a point where a price adjustment is necessary.

That said, this decision isn’t just about keeping the lights on. It’s about protecting the experience your dog has with us.

We’ve built our grooming environment to be calm, one-on-one, and intentionally unhurried. That means taking the time to pause for cuddles when your dog needs reassurance, working at their pace, and never rushing them through for the sake of a schedule. Some days that looks less like a production line and more like a cozy hangout… with scissors.

It also allows us to continue using high-quality products tailored to each dog’s specific coat and skin needs, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our thorough check-ins and onboarding process help us truly understand your dog so we can create the best possible experience for them from day one. We also schedule carefully to minimize overlap, which is especially important for nervous or reactive dogs who need a little extra space and calm.

And just as importantly, this change helps us ensure our team is paid fairly for the incredible, skilled, and compassionate work they do every single day. They deserve that, fully.

We’ll be speaking with each client individually about updated pricing as needed, but wanted to share this here first so you’re aware.
