⚠️ We are not a rescue/shelter ⚠️

VRC is a community of volunteers, enthusiasts, and passionate rat advocates. We are dedicated to creating a space for appreciation, education, and camaraderie for people who have been positively impacted by these animals.

⚠️ We are not a rescue/shelter ⚠️

We occasionally volunteer at, donate to, or otherwise help shelters/rescues when resources are required but we do not currently have any rats

available for adoption, nor are we equipped to take in any surrenders. Please visit our Rescues/Shelters pages for adoption/surrender options or join our Facebook Group to browse potential private rehomes. Please note that the Facebook Group only acts as a resource for those rehoming/adopting to connect. We are not affiliated with any individuals unless specifically mentioned.

Another Update! Only 2 remain ✨️ Sweet Jaq and Dawson still looking for the perfect homes

We have 7 rat friends in our care! They are all social, friendly and have unique little personalities. Introducing Bernard, Gus, Dawson, Remy, Jaq, Emile, and Basil!

These sweet little domestic rats were brought into our care when they were found in poor living conditions. Fortunately, these cuties are all well-socialized and are quite comfortable being handled. They are all estimated to be at approximately 10 months to 1.5 years old.

We are looking to adopt these boys out in pairs of two or more. We will also consider single adoptions from rat owners who have experience doing slow introductions with rats already in the home.

For all applicants, we will need to see photos of the enclosures and spaces that these boys would be living in, to ensure we can find the best forever home for them!

These cuties are lovable, friendly little guys, looking to live out their golden years in a comfortable, safe, loving environment.

If you are interested in applying for any rats in this group, please fill out an application online, or visit our West Vancouver location, Tuesdays to Sundays from 12pm to 3pm.

Recognize this boy?

You might have seen him in a post from a lost-and-found pet group last year. It was late September, around 4 a.m. in Surrey, when a kind man waiting for the bus noticed a little white rat sniffing at his shoe. Finding it unusual, he snapped a quick photo and shared it with a friend.

Maybe you know him from VRC, where he’s become a familiar face—one that’s healed and bounced back from horrific injuries sustained while surviving outdoors.

(Domestic rats simply can’t thrive outside. Without human care and supervision, each day is a struggle. Many aren’t fortunate enough to be found by volunteers willing to search at all hours, in all weather, determined to bring them to safety.)

You might've even helped us come up with his name:
Lucky — for his strength and brave decision to ask for help.
Joe — after the kind stranger who stopped and cared enough to take his photo.
Milton — in memory of Millie, a gentle little PEW found at Mill Lake in Abbotsford a few years ago.

There’s a chance you recognize him because he used to be your boy.
Whatever the circumstances that led to Milton being outside, we want his previous people to know:

He is safe.
He is so, so loved.
He is the fiercest little fighter we’ve ever met.

Milton was exhausted when we found him; smelled of infection with maggots in his wounds. But after just a few days of rest, warm meals, and good medicine, this tiny warrior said, “nevermind,” waddling away from death's door and right back to life.

It hasn’t been easy. He’s wildly enthusiastic, stubborn, and terrible at interpreting social cues from other rats. He’s awkward, he can’t read a room—but he tries. He really tries. His health has been a rollercoaster from the start; with unexplained allergic reactions and lumps that appear and vanish with no apparent rhyme or reason. Most recently, we’ve been treating swelling around his neck. An FNA confirmed lymphatic hyperplasia. We’ve had back-to-back hospital visits, asked endless questions, and leaned heavily on our patient and compassionate vet teams—whom we’re endlessly grateful for.

We don’t regret a single moment. We’d drive out to that bus stop after midnight again and again to find him.

Tomorrow morning, Milton is scheduled for surgery. It’s a complex and high-risk procedure, but the mass hasn’t responded to anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, or steroid injections. Surgery is our last option—our chance for more time.

So whether you’ve known this little man for a while, or you’re meeting him today, please send him a kind thought. Cross your fingers, knock on wood, say a little something to the universe. 🌙💕🐭

We’ll be thinking of you, Lucky Joe Milton.

If you have the energy to do so, please consider engaging with or donating to The Pipsqueakery as they treat an intake of 85+ severely neglected rats from Ohio. Currently they're on standby to receive more (likely 100s both contained and free roaming the site) as soon as authorities sort the situation.

While this isn't local to us, the Pipsqueakery does amazing work with both domestic animals and wildlife, especially rats. 🥹💔 There are photos and mention of injury/death, please exercise caution and prioritize your own wellbeing before checking their other posts.

The first of the Ohio babies were born just moments ago. There are two babies who are nice and pink but the third one was looking a bit purple so I cleared his nose and got him on oxygen. He's pinking up as I type this so I'm about to go return him to his mom.

Hopefully most of the pregnant moms are a bit further out so that we can get them spayed next week before this rat intake multiplies. At The Pipsqueakery we actually spay and neuter all of our rats before they leave our care. We have a staff vet, Dr. Funk, who is amazing so we are able to do large scale intakes like this. On average it takes us $50 per rat to take them from intake, to altering, to transferring to another rescue to be adopted out.

And now the baby is looking good, I have returned him to mom, and she bit me for my trouble. I suppose that's only fair since she thought I stole her child.
