🐾 In Loving Memory of Oscar 🐾
Seventeen years ago, Oscar found his family at the New West Animal Shelter—and from the very beginning, it was clear they belonged together. He emerged from a crowd of cats and immediately formed a bond that would last a lifetime.
Oscar was a loving companion, an expert cuddler, and a talented mouser right to the very end. Known by many affectionate nicknames—including Pins, Pineroo, Da Guy, Oscar Poscar, and Pirate Pins—he filled his home with warmth, comfort, and joy.
The thousands of photos and videos his family treasures are a reflection of a life deeply loved and a bond that will never be forgotten.
Run free, sweet Oscar. ❤️🌈🐾

It’s a hot one out there today, Vancouver! ☀️

Just like us, senior pets can find hot weather a little harder to handle. As they age, staying comfortable in the heat can take a bit more effort, especially for pets with mobility issues, heart disease, breathing problems, or arthritis.

A reminder for today:

💧 Refresh water bowls throughout the day and consider adding an extra bowl in their favourite resting spots.

❄️ Place a damp towel on the floor for your pet to lie near (if they like it) or use a cooling mat.

🏡 Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day to keep indoor spaces cooler.

🚶‍♀️ Save walks for the early morning or later in the evening, and remember that pavement can become surprisingly hot.

🐾 For pets with arthritis, cooler temperatures indoors can be more comfortable than a hot deck or patio.

🐱 Don’t forget about the cats. Many will seek out warm windowsills even on hot days, so make sure they have access to shady spots and fresh water nearby. Some cats also enjoy ice cubes floating in their water bowl.

🍦 A frozen treat can be a nice way to cool off. A Kong stuffed with wet food for dogs or a small portion of chilled wet food for cats can be a welcome treat on a warm afternoon.

❤️ Most importantly, let your pet set the pace today. If they want an extra nap, a shorter walk, or a quiet afternoon indoors, that’s perfectly okay.

Our senior companions have spent years taking care of us. Days like today are a good reminder to return the favour.

After losing her soul dog 🐕 Indie in 2023, and her 24-year-old “grouchy but deeply loved” cat 🐈 Mary in the same year, Katy didn’t think she would ever open her heart to another pet again.
Grief has a way of making that feel impossible. Like the space they leave behind is too big to ever fill. 💜
Fast forward to three months ago, when Mr Chow entered the room with his big round head, striped “pant suit,” and unmistakable resting cat face… and somehow managed to break every heart in it. 💕
Mr Chow is 18 years old and is part of the Permanent Foster Program . He now gets to enjoy his senior years the way every cat should—heated blanket, comfort, safety, and all the home comforts he could possibly want. 🐠
What he also brought was something unexpected: the reminder that opening up to love again doesn’t erase what came before.
It doesn’t replace Indie. It doesn’t replace Mary. Nothing ever could.
But it is possible—at your own time, in your own way—to let something new gently take up space beside the love you already carry.

Long weekends can be such an important reminder to slow down, be present, and spend time truly living in the moment with the ones we love most — especially our four legged companions. 💛

We’ll be here with our regular hours on Saturday and Sunday from 9am–5pm, and on Monday, May 18, our Support Specialists will be available from 9am–2pm.

We are experiencing a higher number of requests over the long weekend, appointment availability is limited. If your companion may need support or care, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

For families looking for additional support, we also have a number of gentle quality of life tools and resources available on our website www.liftingstars.ca to help navigate care, comfort, and decision-making with compassion.

Wishing you and your family a peaceful, connected, and restful weekend together.

🌟 We’re Hiring! 🌟
Lifting Stars is growing, and we’re looking for a compassionate veterinarian to join our team here in beautiful Vancouver.

At Lifting Stars, we focus on providing compassionate at-home euthanasia and palliative care, supporting families as they say goodbye to their loved companions in the comfort and peace of home. Our work is profoundly meaningful — with fewer appointments than general practice, flexible scheduling, and the opportunity to dedicate time to what matters most: honouring the human–animal bond during life’s most important moments. 💜🐾

“I’ll spend a lifetime missing you, but I’d still choose every moment we had.” ✨🐾
You were never just part of my life—you were my comfort, my joy, my constant. Loving you was the easiest thing I’ve ever done, and losing you is the hardest thing I’ll ever carry. If I could, I’d lift every star into the sky just to thank you for the light you gave me. I hope wherever you are, it feels like home.
