It’s a hot one out there today, Vancouver! ☀️
Just like us, senior pets can find hot weather a little harder to handle. As they age, staying comfortable in the heat can take a bit more effort, especially for pets with mobility issues, heart disease, breathing problems, or arthritis.
A reminder for today:
💧 Refresh water bowls throughout the day and consider adding an extra bowl in their favourite resting spots.
❄️ Place a damp towel on the floor for your pet to lie near (if they like it) or use a cooling mat.
🏡 Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day to keep indoor spaces cooler.
🚶♀️ Save walks for the early morning or later in the evening, and remember that pavement can become surprisingly hot.
🐾 For pets with arthritis, cooler temperatures indoors can be more comfortable than a hot deck or patio.
🐱 Don’t forget about the cats. Many will seek out warm windowsills even on hot days, so make sure they have access to shady spots and fresh water nearby. Some cats also enjoy ice cubes floating in their water bowl.
🍦 A frozen treat can be a nice way to cool off. A Kong stuffed with wet food for dogs or a small portion of chilled wet food for cats can be a welcome treat on a warm afternoon.
❤️ Most importantly, let your pet set the pace today. If they want an extra nap, a shorter walk, or a quiet afternoon indoors, that’s perfectly okay.
Our senior companions have spent years taking care of us. Days like today are a good reminder to return the favour.
