Introducing ‘Remme’s Goldenrod Gamble’ call name Dratini!

This guy has been a long time coming, and I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to raise him alongside River and I.

I am beyond thankful to his breeder for her trust in me, and I have a lot of plans for him! But for now he is just living his best puppy life getting to know River and I and our life together.

Class Highlight - Puppy Class

This is the fourth of a series of upcoming class highlight posts which discusses what each class will be covering, who the target audience is, and when it will be available! This class is open to any dogs between the age of 16 weeks and 6 months who are fully vaccinated. This class will be run outdoors in a group setting, so it is of the utmost importance that all puppies have received all vaccinations and are not at risk in this setting! Focus will be placed on socialization, exposure, grooming comfort, confidence, and more to create a well-rounded adult dog in the future. This is not a puppy play group, but will allow for some healthy, structured interaction between puppies as the class progresses that will build healthier adult social skills and play later on.

Length: Once a week for four weeks

Capacity: A maximum of 6 dogs per class

Cost: $200 per dog

Class Highlight - Foundation Obedience

This is the third post of a series of upcoming class highlight posts which discusses what each class will be covering, who the target audience is, and when it will be available! Foundation Obedience

This is a level 1 class focused on learning the basics of obedience training (primarily sit, down, place, leash walking, and basic recall) in a group setting, and is ideal for any dog 16 weeks or older. No prior skills are required, and individual goals can be discussed in class! It is not ideal for reactive dogs, who are recommended to take the reactive dog class instead.

Length: Once a week for four weeks

Capacity: A maximum of 6 dogs per class

Cost: $200 per dog

The Foundation Obedience class is well suited to dogs who are new to training or should get the chance to start from scratch. It is also well suited to dogs with some understanding but who struggle to translate their skills to more challenging environments than in the house. It is a great beginner course to get started!

Please note that if you have a young puppy and are looking for puppy basics and socialization / exposure, the puppy class instead of or in addition to the foundation obedience class may be a good option!

Class Highlight - Trail Dog and Public Skills

This is the second of a series of upcoming class highlight posts which discusses what each class will be covering, who the target audience is, and when it will be available! I have decided to combine the posts for Trail Dog and Public Skills because they have a lot in common, but also some very key differences.

Trail Dog

This is a class best suited for dogs with some basic obedience, but who need to improve their handler engagement and ‘trail dog skills’ so they are better able to join their handlers in the outdoors safely, reliably, and respectfully. Dogs with reactivity will be admitted on a case by case basis. Please reach out for recommendations! Each week for four weeks, this class will run as a group session focusing and building on different skills that create a better trail dog, and homework will be given as practice between sessions. Individual goals will be discussed and worked towards as possible. This class focuses on maintaining obedience, engagement, and recall skills while we are not asking our dogs for a tight, close heel or loose leash walk. This class will cover a lot of long line work!

Length: Once a week for four weeks

Capacity: A maximum of 6 dogs per class

Cost: $200 per dog

Public Skills

This is a level 2 class intended to target the more advanced skills needed for dogs to be neutral in public and develop the ability to access and enjoy more spaces in a way that is not stressful or disruptive. Each week will run as a group session and pack walk in a new location with focus on leash skills, confidence, and neutral behaviours, with individual goals addressed as possible. It is ideal for dogs and handlers who have some basic obedience but need additional support building confidence and management skills in a range of locations or who want support working towards more specific public access goals. Dogs who have taken the Reactive Dog class or the Foundation Obedience class are a good fit for this class. Focus will prioritize tight, clean leash walking and neutrality necessary for going in stores or walking in busy areas.

Length: Once a week for four weeks

Capacity: A maximum of 6 dogs per class

Class Highlight - Reactive Dog

This is the first of a series of upcoming class highlight posts which will discuss what each class will be covering, who the target audience is, and when it will be available! Reactive Dog is a level 1 class targeted at reactive dogs who could benefit from a structured group environment to address their reactivity through building and practicing neutrality and basic obedience skills. Many of the same skills as the Foundation Obedience class will be covered for dogs who need it, but with an approach and environment better pointed at the success of specifically reactive dogs and their handlers.

Length: Once a week for four weeks

Capacity: A maximum of 6 dogs per class

Cost: $200 per dog

The Reactive Dog class is well suited to dogs who need to start from zero, or dogs who need a structured, safe, judgement free place to practice their skills in an environment with other people and dogs. In my experience, most group classes don't want any reactive dogs to attend. This is something that I understand, but feel shouldn't restrict all reactive dogs from being able to take a group class, so I started running classes specifically for reactive dogs and have had a lot of success with handlers building confidence right alongside their dogs and going on to conquer environments they never thought they could!

Hello everyone!

As we get closer to the fall and my return for the upcoming university term, Truro Dog Training will be ramping back up again!

Starting the last week of August, I am very excited to return to offering private sessions, in-home training, dog walking / field trip and sitting services, and I am also intending to start offering group classes and some single day workshops!

Group classes will be offered in level 1 options such as puppy classes, foundation obedience, and my favourite, reactive dog classes, as well as level 2 options such as a public skills course. Please stay tuned for the class calendar to be released, and let me know what you all would like to see offered!

As for workshops, I am hoping to offer some intro sessions to things such as scentwork, crate training, recall, and muzzle sizing + training, along with some other topics as they are requested!

I look forward to the opportunity to work with many of you again or for the first time, so please stay tuned for my calendar to open and let me know what you may want to see offered!
