Stay safe on Sylvan Lake this season with this great information from
Whether you're new to paddleboarding or a seasoned pro, safety should always come first. Too often, emergency crews respond to preventable incidents on the water.
Before you head out, make sure you're prepared, aware of conditions, and properly equipped. A lifejacket isn’t optional—it’s essential.
Let’s work together to keep our lake safe for everyone!

If you're heading onto the lake without a lifejacket, without checking conditions, or while impaired, you're putting yourself and others at risk. Every year, emergency crews respond to incidents on the lake involving folks with stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) who underestimate the water or weather, overestimate their abilities, or ignore basic safety precautions. Drowning can happen faster and quieter than most people realize, so before heading out on your SUP, the want to remind paddlers:

🛟 it is MANDATORY to either wear a personal flotation device (PFD) with a whistle OR carry a PFD, whistle, and floating throw rope on board (Transport Canada supports leash use but NOT as a replacement for lifejackets and PFD's)
🛟 inflatable PFD's are prohibited for people who are under 16 years of age (those under 16 still must wear an alternative type of PFD)
🛟 try to paddle with a partner and always let someone know where you're going
🛟 pay attention to marked swim lines and floating barriers that indicate deep water
🛟 beware of other lake traffic including boats and Sea-Doos
🛟 monitor for weather changes - winds can change rapidly and can easily blow a SUP off course
🛟 stay close to shore, especially if you are inexperienced or there's windy conditions

Remember, a paddleboard is NOT just a pool floatie - it's a personal watercraft and should be treated with the same level of responsibility as any other vessel. Paddleboarding is meant to be fun, but the risks are real, so please make smart choices to keep yourself and everyone around you safe and sound.

🚨 Electric Dirt Bikes in Sylvan Lake – What You Need to Know 🚨
Do you or your family have an electric dirt bike? Municipal Enforcement wants to make sure riders understand the rules within the Town of Sylvan Lake.
In Alberta, electric dirt bikes that don’t meet vehicle equipment and registration standards are not permitted on public roads, streets, highways, sidewalks, or pathways.
👉 Most off‑road “dirt” bikes are designed for trails and do NOT meet requirements to ride legally on public roads.
What this means for riders:
✔️ You can ride on private property (with permission) and on designated off‑road trails where allowed
❌ You cannot ride on public roads, alleys, sidewalks, bike lanes, or highways unless your bike is fully compliant
⚠️ Riding an unregistered or uninsured motor vehicle on public roads may result in:
• Fines
• Vehicle seizure
• Demerit points
Why these rules matter:
🛑 Public safety – helps reduce crashes and protect everyone
📋 Accountability – ensures insurance coverage if someone is injured
Not sure if your bike is legal?
✔️ Don’t ride on public roads unless you’re certain it’s compliant
✔️ Check with Alberta Transportation or your municipality
✔️ Contact your insurance broker or local enforcement for guidance
Stay safe and ride responsibly! 🏍️

🐾 Friendly Reminder About Cat Traps 🐾
If you’re noticing an increase in feral, unhomed, or free-roaming cats around your property, we’re here to help!
Our office offers safe and humane live traps available for rent. These traps are designed with the cats’ wellbeing in mind. Once a cat is safely caught, our officers will come by to pick it up. We’ll then work to return the animal to its owner (when possible or to the Central Alberta Humane Society) and take the opportunity to share information about our Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw.
Our goal is to support both residents and animals in a kind, respectful, and responsible way. 💛
If you’d like more information or to arrange a trap rental, please feel free to reach out—403-858-7280—we’re happy to help!
