This handsome German Shepherd is one of the sweetest, most loving boys you could ever meet — but he also has very sensitive skin, which can make the grooming process a little more challenging for him. Even though grooming can be difficult, it’s also incredibly important to help keep his skin and coat healthy and comfortable.

Dogs like Riggins sometimes require special handling and adjustments to the normal grooming process so I can make the experience as stress-free and beneficial as possible for them 💙

For this big guy, at-home brushing and regular maintenance are very important between appointments to help move oils, dirt, and dandruff off the skin while keeping matting and buildup to a minimum.

I’m already looking forward to seeing Riggins again soon and watching his beautiful coat continue to transform! ✨

Summer Paw Care Tip 🐶👇
Is your dog constantly licking their toes and causing irritation? Have you been applying paw ointment with little to no improvement? The secret is in the prep first!

🫧 Start by washing the paws thoroughly with a good cleansing shampoo to remove dirt, oils, and buildup.
✔️ Lather, rinse, and repeat — yes, wash twice!

💨 Next comes the MOST important step: DRY DRY DRY!
If the skin and hair follicles are still full of moisture, the ointment can’t properly absorb into the skin barrier. Use a hair dryer, pet dryer, or even a fan pointed at the toes until they are completely dry.

🐾 THEN apply your paw ointment so it can properly soak in and do its job!

⚠️ Leaving moisture trapped in the hair and skin can also lead to fungal infections, creating a cycle where your pup keeps licking the irritated area and continuously keeps it wet and moist — the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast.⚠️

Sweet senior pups had a spa day at Off The Chain Dog Grooming 🐾💕

Cheeky the Labrador Retriever was an absolute pleasure to have in the salon today! She is fantastically trained and made grooming such a wonderful experience. While she does require a little extra special handling, it’s not because of behaviour — Cheeky is simply enjoying her senior years and has a few bumps and lumps that require me to be extra mindful throughout the grooming process.

One of the many benefits of regular grooming for senior dogs is that it allows me to monitor any changes in their skin, coat, or overall health and keep pet parents updated if I notice anything new. ❤️

Libby, a beautiful older Great Pyrenees mix, came in needing some much deserved TLC. One of her biggest concerns was overgrown nails. When nails become too long, the quick grows along with them, which limits how short they can safely be trimmed in a single appointment. I carefully trimmed her nails as close to the quick as possible, the quick can then begin to recede — allowing me to gradually get those nails back to a healthier length with consistent follow-up trims.

You could truly see the relief all over Libby’s face with every step of the process, and I’m so happy I could help her feel more comfortable again. 🥰

For pets requiring significant coat restoration or additional grooming care, initial appointments may be priced higher than standard maintenance grooms. This allows adequate time to safely and comfortably address the pet’s needs while accounting for the increased use of grooming tools, equipment, and handling required during the process. Maintaining a consistent grooming schedule — ideally every 4–8 weeks depending on coat type and lifestyle — helps support your dog’s overall comfort, health, and well-being. ✂️🐶

🐾 Meet Rider! 🐾

Rider, the Australian Shepherd, came in for his very first groom with me at Off The Chain Dog Grooming! ❤️

As you can imagine, there were definitely a few things that were a brand new experience for him, and a bit of a learning curve too. But moments like these are where staying calm, cool, and collected really makes all the difference for unsure dogs. With a little reassurance and patience, Rider worked through the process so well!

I think one of his favourite parts might have been crawling into my lap during drying time 😂🐶 That definitely seemed to help him feel a little safer!

By the end of the appointment, he even chose to lay down on the table and let me brush out his belly — such a huge win for a first groom! 🙌

He still has a few things to work on during the grooming process, but honestly, these are some of my favourite grooms to do. Watching dogs build confidence and seeing their progress through consistency is one of the most rewarding parts of this career. ❤️

Whiskey the Golden Retriever and Lucky the Boxer mix came in today definitely excited for their spaw day! 🛁🐾

After their baths, both pups took a little time getting comfortable with the blow dryer, but once they realized it wasn’t too scary, they were able to relax and enjoy their brush outs.

It’s always so rewarding watching dogs build confidence during their grooming visits, and I’m excited to see both Whiskey and Lucky continue to grow more comfortable with regular appointments! ❤️

Ed came by for a salon visit today and was such a pleasure to groom! His haircut included some hand stripping and a lot of carding to help keep his coat looking its best.

Hand stripping is a grooming technique where dead hair is gently pulled from the coat by hand instead of clipped, helping maintain the proper texture and colour of certain breeds’ coats. Carding is the process of removing the soft, loose undercoat with special tools to reduce bulk and allow the harsher topcoat to lay properly. Together, these techniques help keep the coat healthy, neat, and natural-looking.

Ed was such a gentleman throughout his appointment, and I can’t wait to see him back at the salon again soon! 🐾

Today at Off The Chain Dog Grooming, I had the pleasure of spending time with two wonderful pups! 🐾

This morning, Lenny visited the salon for a fresh new haircut with a little extra style and charm — and I’m very happy with how adorable he turned out! ✂️✨

Later this afternoon, Kota the Golden Retriever came in for her appointment and was an absolute sweetheart from start to finish. 🐶❤️

Both dogs were a joy to groom today, and I look forward to welcoming them back again soon!
