Meet Luna!

Luna is a five-year-old, 6.5-pound Chihuahua looking for a quiet home and someone willing to give her a little time to settle in.

She is very shy when meeting new people and needs some time to decide that you’re safe. Once she does, though, Luna is a little shadow. She follows her person around the house, loves a lap and sleeps burrowed under the blankets at night. She seems to have a particular soft spot for men, too.

Luna is a low-energy girl and is happiest at home with her people. She does well with other dogs, although she mostly just minds her own business and certainly doesn’t need a canine companion. She would be equally happy as an only dog. She is perfectly fine with cats too.

She has done well with children, but because she’s tiny and easily frightened, we’re looking for a quieter home without young kids.

Luna is house trained and p*e pad trained. She can also be left home without being destructive or vocal, although when you’re there, expect her to keep tabs on where you are.

The biggest consideration for Luna’s new home is safety. She is very frightened of the outside world, is not currently leash trained and is a significant flight risk. A securely fenced yard is an absolute requirement for her adoption.

Her new family also needs to be comfortable meeting Luna where she is right now. We don’t expect her to be heading out for neighbourhood walks anytime soon. Building her confidence may come with time, but we’re not looking for someone who sees Luna as a project that needs to be fixed. She needs a safe home, a predictable routine and people who are happy to let her figure things out at her own pace.

So, Luna’s wish list is actually pretty simple: a quiet home without young children, a securely fenced yard, someone who is home quite a bit, and a person who doesn’t mind sharing their lap and their blankets with 6.5 pounds of Chihuahua.

MARS COMMUNITY — WE COULD USE A LITTLE CAT HELP 🐱

We know we’ve been asking a lot of our community lately. We also know that people help when and where they can, and every single time you do, we appreciate it.

This weekend, we’re preparing to welcome approximately 6–8 Bengal cats into MARS care. And there is one small problem with this plan: our supply closet currently screams “DOG RESCUE.” 😂

We’re all set for dry cat food thanks to a previous generous donation, but there are a few things we need:

🐱 OdourLock Unscented Cat Litter — specifically the kind pictured. It’s available locally at Global Pet Foods. If you purchase a bag there, you can leave it at the store for MARS and we’ll pick it up.

🥫 Canned Cat Food — any brand or variety is welcome! If you have cans sitting in your cupboard that your own cat has turned up their nose at, we will happily take them. Donations can be dropped off at 689 Talbot Street. If you purchase food for us at Global Pet Foods or Pet Valu locally, it can be left there and we can arrange pickup.

🐾 Large Litter Pans — we need approximately 8 large, unused litter pans.

The Bengals coming into our care range from approximately 11 months to 3 years old, and the early information we have is that they are social and sweet. Each one will need veterinary care, vaccinations and to be spayed or neutered before becoming available for adoption.

And a HUGE thank you to the people who have already stepped forward to foster one or two of these cats. Your offers are the reason we’re able to help this many in the first place.

If you can toss a bag of litter, a few cans of food or a litter pan our way, it will make getting this crew settled considerably easier.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨

Molson has three legs.

We thought we should get that out of the way, because Molson has approximately 75 pounds of other things he’d much rather tell you about.

For starters, he would like everyone to know that he is VERY good at fetch.

House trained? Yep.
Crate trained? Yep.
Neutered? Yep.
Taken obedience classes? Yep.
Fetch? Throw the ball already.
Four legs? Nope.
Particularly concerned about that? Also nope.

Born in September 2025, Molson is a big, goofy young Shepherd/farm mix who loves being involved in whatever his people are doing. He loves his walks and is currently working on his walking pace, because Molson has places to go and apparently hasn't received the memo that a walk isn't a race.

But bring out a ball and you'll really get his attention. Molson absolutely loves fetch and will happily keep the game going, making it a pretty easy way to help burn off some of that young dog energy.

And then there’s the owl.

We feel it’s important to mention that this approximately 75 pound dog has a stuffed owl that he absolutely adores and takes EVERYWHERE. Around the house, outside, wherever Molson is going, apparently Owl has plans too. We’re not sure the photos fully capture the ridiculous cuteness of this arrangement, but trust us, it’s good.

So yes, he’s big. He’s goofy. He has three legs. And he carries his stuffed owl around like it’s an essential piece of equipment.

Molson had one of his back legs amputated and has adapted incredibly well. Of course, being a tripod is something his future family needs to consider, particularly when it comes to keeping him at a healthy weight, maintaining his strength and being mindful of things like excessive stairs. But day to day, Molson is busy being a dog.

A very large dog, as it turns out.

At approximately 75 pounds, Molson would do best with older children simply because he doesn't always realize quite how much Molson there is.

As for other dogs, Molson can live with the right canine companion, but he's not looking for just any roommate. A confident, well matched dog who can comfortably navigate his big personality could be a good fit. He would also be perfectly happy as the only dog and keeping the people, attention and tennis balls to himself. Either arrangement works for Molson. He's just particular about who gets a key to the house.

He's curious about cats and may bark at or chase them, so any feline roommate would need to be confident and dog savvy, with introductions taken slowly.

FOSTER CALL: Could You Foster a Bengal Cat?

One of our rescue partners is taking in a large number of Bengals and has asked whether MARS can help by taking a few into our care. We’d love to say yes, but we will only commit to the number of cats we have appropriate foster homes for.

These are adult Bengals, both males and females. Bengals are beautiful, intelligent, active cats who tend to be curious, athletic and a little busier than your average house cat.

For this intake, fosters must have a private room available where their foster cat can be completely separated from resident pets and the main household for the first couple of weeks. These cats will need time to decompress, and we will also be treating that initial period as a quarantine before beginning any introductions to other animals in the home.

MARS provides the supplies, veterinary care and support — you provide the safe landing spot.

If you’ve ever thought, “I could foster a cat,” and you have a spare bedroom, office or other secure room that can temporarily belong to a Bengal, this might be your chance to help.

Happy Monday, everyone. Apparently this week is starting with a baby. A surprise baby. A very tiny, very unexpected baby. 😂

Yesterday, MARS agreed to take in a little female Maltese named Victoria from a breeder shut-down situation. We knew going in that Victoria had severe, chronic ear infections that had been left untreated for far too long, and unfortunately her ears are in very bad shape.

Dogs coming from breeding facilities have often lived with repeated infections without appropriate veterinary treatment. Over time, inflammation and scar tissue can cause permanent changes to the ear canals, turning what may once have been a treatable infection into a painful chronic condition that can have a significant impact on quality of life.

We knew Victoria might be a bigger medical commitment when we said yes. Our plan was to get her settled into a quiet foster home, continue treating the infection and inflammation, and give her some time before determining whether her ears can be managed medically or whether she will ultimately require surgery.

Then Victoria arrived.

She was an absolutely lovely little thing, but we couldn’t help noticing her tummy looked… suspicious.

About ten hours later, Victoria cleared up the mystery herself by giving birth to one tiny baby boy.

Meet Arthur. ❤️

Mother and son were seen by our veterinary team this morning. X-rays confirmed that Arthur is, in fact, an only child — there are no other puppies hiding in there. At this point Victoria is doing well, Arthur appears healthy, and our veterinarian isn’t currently concerned about him. Considering the rather chaotic circumstances surrounding his arrival, we’ll happily take that news.

Now we turn our attention back to getting Victoria healthy while she also gets the unexpected job of raising little Arthur.

And this is the part where we ask for a little help.

You know we don’t like constantly asking our community for money, but MARS is currently absolutely swamped with medical dogs. We hate saying no to intakes, but responsibly, we’re at capacity right now because several of our recent dogs require significant veterinary care. Our veterinary partners do everything they can to help us manage costs, but there’s no getting around the reality: sick dogs come with big bills.

So this week, if you can skip one coffee and send Victoria, Arthur and the rest of the MARS crew $5, we would be incredibly grateful. Five-dollar donations don’t sound huge until a whole community decides to throw in five bucks.

For now, Victoria is safe. Her ears are finally being properly treated. Her surprise little passenger has safely arrived. And Arthur seems quite content with his new position as MARS’s smallest current resident and Victoria’s one and only.

Hey folks, I’m sure many of you have heard the wonderful news by now: Meadow is safe with us.

We are so incredibly relieved to have her safely tucked into a temporary foster home where she can rest and begin recovering.

Getting Meadow to safety was very much a community effort. We are so grateful to the many people who have been watching for her, sharing information and especially those who faithfully left food out for her. That food likely saved her life and will make her recovery so much easier. Meadow is in rough shape, but she could have been in much worse condition without the people who made sure she had something to eat while she was out there.

Meadow was finally captured through the team effort of St. Thomas Animal Services and K9 Ground Search. These folks have had far too many sleepless nights over the past eight weeks trying to bring these dogs to safety. So far, six Mastiffs have been rounded up after being abandoned. Six. It is difficult to even wrap our heads around. We are so incredibly grateful for these community heroes.

Here’s what we know about Meadow right now.

She is a young adult Mastiff, and we believe she is an English Mastiff. She currently weighs somewhere around 80 pounds. A healthy weight for her will likely be in the 120–150 pound range, which means this girl has a very long way to go.

Right now, Meadow feels like crap. There really isn’t a nicer way to say it. She is weak, exhausted and significantly underweight. For the next couple of weeks, her only job is to rest, decompress and eat according to a carefully managed refeeding protocol. When a dog is this underweight, you can’t simply start pouring calories into them. We need to help her body adjust safely while we see how she tolerates food and begins gaining strength.

At this point, she has shown us no signs of aggressive behaviour toward children, cats or other dogs, but it is much too early to tell you who Meadow really is. Right now we are meeting a dog who is depleted and tired. As she starts feeling better, we’ll get to know her personality, her needs and what kind of home will eventually be right for her.

And eventually is the important word there.

**We are not accepting adoption applications for Meadow yet.** This is just the beginning of her journey. She will not be available for adoption until she is healthy enough to be safely spayed, and we have plenty to learn about her before we even begin thinking about finding her permanent home.

Meadow will also be a bit of a long-haul dog for MARS. Her current foster is giving her exactly what she needs during these critical first weeks, but once she is medically stable, **we will need another foster home to continue her recovery.** If you would like to be part of Meadow’s journey, you can apply to foster here:

There is a lot of work ahead, but today we're just really damn happy she's here. ❤️

🐾 Meet Mr. Enzo

Three kilos of Yorkie. Approximately 30 kilos of confidence.

Mr. Enzo is around 3 years old, weighs just under 7 pounds, and is a Yorkshire Terrier through and through. He is busy, funny, affectionate, feisty and quite certain that whatever is happening, he should be involved.

Enzo operates at two sp*eds: GO, GO, GO and completely crashed. He loves walks, car rides, playing chase with his foster sisters and following his foster mom around the house. He's a very affectionate little guy who likes being close to his people, and we're looking for a home where someone will be around most of the time. If you're heading out on an adventure, even better. Enzo would very much like the copilot position.

He's house trained, crate trained and does really well when life has some structure. Enzo can get worked up and overstimulated when he's excited, but clear, simple direction helps him settle and refocus. He is a smart little dog and will do best with someone who appreciates that consistency and rules are just as important for a 7 pound dog as they are for a 70 pound one.
Enzo is selective about his dog friends. He's doing very well with the spayed and neutered dogs in his foster home and enjoys playing with his foster sisters, but he does not do well with unaltered dogs or dogs who challenge him. He also needs to eat separately from other animals because Enzo has very strong feelings about his food and will start a fight over it.
Cats are a no for Enzo. He will persistently chase them. He's done well with children, and we think kids around 8 years and older would be the best match for his personality and energy.

I mean… how can you say no to this face? If not you, then who?

Unfortunately, dogs are very good at making that face and MARS is very bad at saying no. Which brings us to our current problem:

We need more foster homes. Please. Please please please. 😂

Every time we have an open foster home, it means we can say YES to another dog who needs somewhere safe to land. Sometimes it’s a puppy who needs a few weeks to grow up. Sometimes it’s an adult dog who just needs a reset and a little help finding the right people. Sometimes it’s a dog sitting in a shelter who simply needs somewhere to go before we can bring them into rescue.

You don’t have to be a dog-training wizard. You don’t need a house in the country with 14 acres and a heated dog wing — but if this is you, please call us! You just need a suitable home, some patience, and the willingness to temporarily add a little extra chaos to your life.

MARS covers all supplies, veterinary care and mentorship. You provide the home, the routine, the love and approximately 600 photos that we love for adoption profiles.

And yes, giving them up can be hard. But fostering isn’t about keeping every dog. It’s about being the reason we can save the next one. It’s kind of like other people’s kids — some you REALLY love like they’re your own, and others you are very happy to see their parents come pick up. Ha!

We have dogs who need us, and right now our biggest limitation is simply somewhere for them to go.

🐾 Meet Captain

Captain is a 6 year old Schipperke/Pomeranian mix, 21 pounds of fluff, and a guy who gets genuinely excited about the important things in life: his people, car rides, going outside and treats.

Say the words “car ride” and Captain is ready. He'll start spinning, head for the door and, if you're taking too long, bark to remind you that some of us have places to be. When you come home, he's just as enthusiastic and has been known to walk toward his foster on his back legs, waving his front paws in the air to say hello.

Around the house, Captain is actually a pretty easygoing guy. He's house trained, has free run of his foster home and is happy curled up on the couch, relaxing in his dog bed or lying at someone's feet. He loves his whole foster family, but he's definitely the type to pick a favourite person and become their regular sidekick.

Captain enjoys his walks, loves visiting people and is always up for a drive. He's good with other dogs, although he'd prefer that rambunctious puppies keep their wrestling matches to themselves. He could live with another compatible dog or be perfectly happy as the only one. Cats are unknown.

He's done well with teenagers and neighbourhood children, although we think older, respectful kids would suit him best. He doesn't need someone home every minute of the day and has been comfortable alone for a few hours.

And because Captain apparently wasn't entertaining enough already, he has a small repertoire of tricks. For a treat, he'll stand on his back legs, spin, lie down and roll over. He also takes household fly control very seriously and will happily attempt to catch any that make the mistake of entering his airspace.
