Tick season is here in Southwestern Ontario, and with the warmer weather finally settling in, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about protecting your pets. 🪲

Ticks are typically active from April through October, becoming more prevalent as temperatures rise above 4°C. While spring and fall tend to be peak times, ticks can stick around anytime we get mild weather—even in winter.

These tiny pests are more than just a nuisance. Ticks can carry diseases like Lyme disease, which can affect both pets and people. The good news is there are simple steps you can take to keep your furry family members safe.

Prevention is key. Talk to your veterinarian about tick prevention products—there are several safe and effective options available, including topical treatments, oral medications, and collars. Keeping your grass short, clearing brush, and sticking to well-maintained trails during walks can also help reduce exposure.

After spending time outdoors, make it a habit to check your pet for ticks. Pay close attention to areas like the ears, under the collar, between the toes, and around the tail. If you find a tick, remove it as soon as possible using a tick-removing tool or fine-tipped tweezers, pulling it straight out without twisting. Be sure to clean the area afterward and monitor your pet for any signs of illness, such as lethargy, fever, or loss of appetite.

If you’re ever unsure or notice anything unusual, your veterinarian is your best resource.

At just 2 years old, Samson already has quite the story to tell. Originally found as a stray just outside of St. Thomas, this resilient boy found refuge in a kind couple’s greenhouse, where he stayed warm, safe, and well-fed through the winter months. Thanks to their compassion, Samson was then brought into the care of Animal Aide to begin his next chapter.

Samson is extremely affectionate and social—the kind of cat who will happily soak up all the love and attention you have to give. Whether it’s curling up beside you or greeting you at the door, he’s always ready to be your loyal companion.

Kitten season has officially kicked off here at Animal Aide of St. Thomas-Elgin… and these tiny little lives are just the beginning.

Every spring and summer, our rescue sees an overwhelming number of newborn kittens needing care, warmth, medical attention, and love. These fragile babies depend entirely on us—and on you.

From bottle feeding around the clock to providing safe spaces to grow, kitten season is both incredibly rewarding and incredibly demanding.
