As the weather starts warming up, it’s important to remember that summer can be tough on our dogs if we’re not careful ☀️🐾

A few important reminders for dog owners:

• HOT pavement can burn paws quickly. If you can’t comfortably hold your hand on the pavement for 5–7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog.

• Heat stroke can happen FAST — especially in brachycephalic breeds, overweight dogs, senior dogs, and high-drive dogs that won’t stop themselves. Watch for excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, glazed eyes, or collapse.

• Always provide access to fresh water and shade during outdoor time.

• Avoid intense exercise during peak heat hours. Early mornings and evenings are safest.

• Never leave your dog in a parked vehicle — even with windows cracked.

• Be cautious around water. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and exhaustion can happen quickly.

• Keep an eye out for signs of bloat/GDV, especially in large deep-chested breeds. Bloat is a medical emergency and requires immediate veterinary attention.

• Remember that excitement and over-arousal in the heat can push dogs past their limits before they realize they need a break.

Summer should be fun for everyone — just take a few precautions to keep your dogs safe, healthy, and comfortable 🐶☀️

After some training and play, we make sure we practice just hanging out together. I use the cots at the beginning especially with puppies/young dogs or higher energy dogs who don't regulate themselves well, to help them get used to shifting in energy and reaching a state of calmness/relaxation. With consistency, eventually 2 things start to happen: 1) the dogs start "placing" themselves and 2) when the fun is over, with or without a cot, the dogs start to settle on their own without needing me to micro manage them in ALL contexts.
