Meet Honey! 🍯

Honey is an 8-month-old Maltese who was surrendered to Bright Eyes Dog Rescue. She was one of the 47 small breed dogs that was surrendered from the property. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, Honey, along with the others, suffered from neglect. After her surrender, she was in need of significant grooming as she was suffering from severe matting as were the others. At this time, it is noted that many of the dogs from this group need dental work as they are experiencing dental issues and are in need of being spayed or neutered. These procedures are all a part of their care plans.

Despite the challenging start, it is noted from Bright Eyes Dog Rescue that Honey is thriving in her foster home and is learning more each and every day of what the world has to offer and is gradually understanding that humans can be trusted. Her foster family is spoiling her and giving her all the extra love she needs, as she deserves.

We are happy to team up with Bright Eyes Dog Rescue and take part in the care these dogs require and help in any way we can. While Honey is not available for adoption yet, head over to the Bright Eyes Dog Rescue page to keep an eye out and find out how you can donate and help out with these dogs’ care and/or any future rescue animal's care.

Every March, we celebrate National Nutrition Month. Animals need a balanced diet, just like humans. Please consider the nutrients in their diet, including protein, fats, minerals, and vitamins.

Remember, your veterinarian is always there to help — talk to them about choosing a balanced and nutritious diet for your pet.

A reminder that ALL pets need to be in carriers or on a leash to enter the clinic. If you use a retractable leash, they need to be locked and kept in close distance to the owner.

For health and safety purposes for staff, owner's and patients, we feel that this is a very important reminder as we have had an increased amount of pets coming in with no leash or not in carriers. We would also like to remind the owner's to please respect others and their pets. Some patients are sick, reactive, or nervous and need some space. Please be mindful and respectful of others and their pets and avoid interactions!

We thank you for your understanding and help to keep positive experiences for patients and owners! 🐾

Today is World Spay Day!

WCVM clinicians and students participate in several initiatives to help provide spay and neuter services with community partners and volunteer organizations such as the Saskatoon SPCA, CatSnip and the Canine Action Project. Together they spay and neuter hundreds of animals every year.

The WCVM’s Northern Engagement and Community Outreach (NECO) program also connects northern and remote communities in Saskatchewan with clinicians, students and volunteers who help provide veterinary services through spay/neuter and wellness clinics.

This is Casey ✨

Casey came in for her Feline Leukemia Virus booster.

❗️Why is this important?

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a common virus worldwide that only infects members of the cat family. This virus weakens the immune system and can cause multiple illnesses like cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, severe anemia, and problems in multiple areas of the body like the eyes, nerves, and intestines. These changes do not always happen right after infection – it can be months to years later before they become sick.

Direct contact between cats is the most frequent method of FeLV infection, typically through saliva but it can also be passed through other bodily fluids. The virus is thankfully not highly contagious and does tend to require a long period of contact like grooming each other, biting during a fight, or when sharing food and water bowls. Not all cats who are exposed to the virus become infected – their immune system can fight it off!

Testing for FeLV infection is done with a quick and easy blood test in the clinic. There is a preventative vaccine that is recommended for cats who spend time outside (especially if unsupervised) and may come into contact with stray or unknown cats.
