2026 Nijmegen March Call for Nominations
Introduction/Situation
The Nijmegen 4 Day March, officially known as the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen, has been held since 1909. Originally a military training exercise, it has evolved into a civilian event that attracts tens of thousands of participants from over 70 countries. Every year, around 40,000 to 45,000 participants join the march, including both civilians and military personnel. Participants can choose to walk distances of 30 km, 40 km, or 50 km daily, depending on their age and gender. Each day of the march features a different route through the scenic landscapes surrounding Nijmegen. The routes are designed to be enjoyable and challenging, with participants walking through towns and nature.
The event is known for its festive atmosphere, with thousands of spectators cheering on the walkers. Participants are often greeted with music, dancing, and even flowers as they approach the finish line, particularly along the famous "Via Gladiola" route. Upon completion of the march, participants receive the "Vierdaagsekruis," a medal awarded for their achievement, which is a symbol of perseverance and camaraderie.
