Most pet parents focus on what’s in their pet’s bowl🥣, but this conversation shows that what the food is stored in matters just as much!

Materials like glass, food grade ceramic, and stainless steel sit at the top because they’re inert and don’t interact with food, while plastics fall into a spectrum depending on their type, quality, and condition. More stable plastics like #2, #4, and #5 can be reasonable options, but they’re still not completely inert, especially over time with exposure to fats, heat, and wear. Lower-quality or unknown plastics ( #3, #6, 7) raise more concern due to additives and higher potential for chemical migration, particularly when containers become scratched, cloudy, or degraded. Silicone is stable for short term use, but capable of absorbing oils and odours with long-term use.

One of the most practical takeaways is that storage habits matter: keeping kibble in its original bag and placing the whole bag inside a container helps reduce direct contact and preserves freshness. It’s nearly impossible to eliminate plastic entirely, but reducing long-term exposure from everyday storage is possible.

A new peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Animal Science found that nearly half of dog owners feed the exact same dog food every day, same brand, same flavor, little to no rotation. Researchers also found that protein source, especially chicken🐓, heavily influences purchasing decisions.

While consistency may help some sensitive dogs short term, long-term dietary monotony can reduce microbiome🦠 diversity and create a less resilient gut ecosystem over time. Different proteins, fibers, and plant compounds feed different beneficial bacteria, so repetitive diets may contribute to dysbiosis, weaker gut resilience, lower postbiotic production, and a greater risk of sensitivities and inflammatory issues.

The takeaway? Convenience and routine may come at the expense of microbiome diversity and long-term gut health.
If you cannot change your food, adding a variety of foods like veggies can also help nourish the microbiome by providing different types of fiber and plant compounds that feed beneficial gut bacteria. Probiotics as well can help support microbial diversity, strengthen the gut barrier, improve digestion, and increase resilience during stress, antibiotics, and dietary changes.

(ADOPTED)

Lenny is still waiting for his forever home… and honestly, it’s starting to break our hearts 💔

He has been so patient through it all, watching other dogs come and go while he’s still here, just hoping his turn will come. And the truth is — he deserves it so much. Lenny is such a loving, loyal, amazing dog who just wants someone to choose him.

He’s great with other dogs and has so much love to give, but he can play a little rough with smaller animals, so a home without cats would be best for him.

We don’t understand how he’s still here… he’s ready, he’s waiting, and he’s been nothing but wonderful.

Please, if you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family — consider Lenny. Or even just share his story. Let’s help him finally find the home he’s been so patiently waiting for 🐾

ADOPTED BY WONDERFUL PEOPLE -MEET PEACHES - This is Mario's sister. Peaches is darling little sweetheart. She is about 10 weeks old. She weighs 4 lbs. We see a mix of a Cavalier Spaniel and a chihuahua; but we could be wrong. We think she will be about 15-20 lbs as an adult. Peaches is a loving girl who follows her people around. She loves to be picked up and cuddled. She loves to play. We think Peaches would suit most households. She is a baby and can be integrated with cats. She lvoes other dogs and would enjoy another dog as a friend as long as she has her human nearby. He is going to be fine with children as long as they gentle. Peaches is in the Lower Mainland.

Thinking about getting a Doodle, Cockapoo or any Poodle mix? Have you been told they "don't need grooming until 1yrs old" or "coat maintenance is easy"?

*PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING piece written by a groomer..in the pic that's known as a pelted coat /Pelting. A dog’s fur gets so matted & tangled it will come off in one piece. It's outs tension on the skin, can damage the skin causing horrible infections and sometimes renders the dog helpless, unable to move and it can then cause fatality
-------->

Poodle crosses (cockapoos, doodles, maltipoos etc.) are not "easy breeds" to maintain. The photo attached (shared from another groomer) shows how matting forms at the skin. By looking at this dog's top coat, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but under that fluffy top layer this is going on. Once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush out... and even if you could it would be cruel to put the dog through it. Maintenance at home has to be more than a quick once over for these dogs if you want to keep them in that fluffy coat which was probably one of the reasons you chose a poodle cross in the first place. You really need to sit down with a brush and then a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body at least 2 to 3 times a week.

I often feel like owners don't believe groomers when they say their dog has to be clipped very short. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can". You cannot clip through matting, you can only clip under it. As this photo shows, clipping under the matting means taking the coat back to the skin.
I promise you, your groomer really doesn't want to do this but they won't hurt your dog by putting it through dematting, they also don't want to hurt their reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog but there really is not any alternative. Instead of being angry with your groomer if they clip your dog very short please respect their commitment to do what is in your dog's best interest, accept responsibility for not having brushed your dog properly at home, and work with your groomer because, together, you can prevent this happening again. All groomers will be very happy to demonstrate a technique called line brushing which will help make your grooming at home more effective. Just ask! We all want owners to know how to do this

Poodle crosses are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is extremely prone to matting.

If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming and set aside time for regular brushing AND combing at home.

Please know, if you bathe your poodle cross you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. Moisture, be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to make matting worse. If you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out before the bath.

Lastly "breeders" who say these dogs can't or shouldnt be clipped and not to give them a hair cut until they are one year old are misleading potential owners in order to sell$$$$ puppies and setting them up for a sad day when they finally take their pup to the groomer!!!

If this hasn't put you off buying one please schedule your puppy's first groom immediately after they've had their vaccinations and then be prepared to do the maintenance at home between regular professional grooms.

ADOPTED BY LOVELY PEOPLE- MEET KIERAN - Kieran is a 4‑month‑old, 12‑lb mixed wire‑haired terrier mix with a soft heart, a curious mind, and the sweetest cuddly nature. He’s gentle, affectionate, playful, and wonderfully patient for such a young pup. His favourite thing in the world is curling up with his people — he melts right into you like he was made for snuggles. Kieran loves exploring the yard, playing with toys, and spending time with other dogs. He’s been respectful and non‑reactive with the resident cat, and he greets new people with friendly enthusiasm. In new situations he can be a little cautious, but with patience and reassurance he settles beautifully and gains confidence quickly. We think Kieran would make a wonderful pet for most households. Kids, dogs and cats are OK (training still needed for any cat). See video below.
To adopt Kieran, please go to our website and fill in an adoption application form online at www. bigandsmallrescue.com or email us at [email protected]
