Norma is back at home!
Everything went very well- the surgeon said she will have minimal arthritis later on in life 😊
Thank you all for the heartfelt warm wishes. Always stressful being on the other side of things ❤️

Some photos of her at the hospital, on her drive home, and at home. And yes, she has the dreaded E collar on at all times when unsupervised (only off when I am 100% watching her)

Also if anyone has any tips for puzzles and mental stimulation games while she’s in recovery please share!

Bates update. 41kg! 10.5 months
He had a visit at work today while Norma is still away (but she’s coming home today!)
He’s turning into a goofy giant as he’s aging- no longer the rambunctious puppy he used to be.
And too big to lift- couldn’t do it. 😂

What’s new otherwise? He’s showing some marking behaviour which is typical at his age before he’s neutered. Because he is a giant breed male dog I am trying to wait until closer to 1.5 years to neuter him as long as no behavioural problems arise (ex signs of aggression, running away to find a mate). This has been shown to be more beneficial for his joints if possible to wait, but always have to outweigh pros and cons of different situations.

He and Norma will be separated now for 6 weeks (yikes!) during her recovery so he’ll have to find other friends in the meantime 😊

Update on Norma,
22 weeks. Beautiful and gentle dog.
However, she has been limping on her left front leg for the past 4 weeks on and off, worse with exercise.

X-rays revealed she has an Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP) involving her left elbow. This is a type of elbow dysplasia where her elbow hasn’t formed properly during development, leaving a small piece unattached thus creating lameness, and eventually arthritis. 🙁

Even though Norma’s breeder was diligent and both parents passed for any signs of elbow or hip dysplasia through an organization called OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for animals), developmental abnormalities can still occur.

Thankfully there is a surgery that can be done at her age to screw the portion of the elbow that is refusing to fuse, thus significantly minimizing her arthritis when she is fully grown.

She is off tomorrow to Vancouver to have this surgery done with a board certified surgeon. Wish her well during her surgery, and recovery, which any pet parent whose pet has had bone surgery knows, will be the most difficult for her. ❤️

(Abormal left elbow with defect circled; normal right elbow to compare)

🐾 Why Annual Exams Matter – Nash’s Story 🐾

Meet Nash – a happy, playful one-year-old cat who’s been through more than his fair share of adventures!

When Nash was just a kitten, he was hit by a car and had to have one of his legs amputated. At that time, chest x-rays showed everything looked normal, and he bounced back beautifully.

Fast forward to this year’s routine annual exam, his owner had no concerns at all. Nash was doing great! But during his checkup, Dr. Fuller noticed it was difficult to hear his heartbeat clearly. To be safe, she recommended chest x-rays...

What we found was shocking: Nash had developed a large diaphragmatic hernia, meaning many of his abdominal organs had shifted up into his chest cavity. This is a serious, life-threatening condition — and he was showing no outward signs.

Thanks to his annual exam, we caught it early and were able to refer him to a specialty hospital in Edmonton. Nash's surgery was successful and he is home and recovering wonderfully.💛

Nash’s story is the perfect reminder that annual exams aren’t just about vaccines, they’re about catching the things we can’t see. Even healthy, happy pets can have hidden issues that only a thorough veterinary exam can uncover.

Give your pets the same chance Nash had; book their annual exam today.

Look how talented Ella our receptionist is!
Not only can she multitask all of the calls, emails, texts we receive, but she can draw too!
She drew this lovely picture of Bates and Norma, and is open to doing other pet portraits if anyone is interested- you know where to find her 😉

I was going to do a Halloween post but the costumes I bought for Bates and Norma wouldn’t fit 🫠 XL is deceptive and not big enough for these two…

🌟 Tech Month Feature – Kelly 🌟

To wrap up Tech Month, we’re celebrating the one and only Kelly, the OG Registered Veterinary Technician of Hart Family Veterinary Clinic! 💙

Kelly has been with HFVC since day one; going strong for 11 years. Her incredible knowledge, skill, and dedication set the foundation for the high standard of care we provide today. She’s the steady hand behind the scenes, guiding the team, supporting her fellow techs, and always putting patient care first.

From day one to year eleven, Kelly has been the heart of our tech crew, and we are endlessly grateful for everything she brings to our clinic family.

Drop a 🐾 in the comments if you’d like to thank Kelly for her 11 years of amazing care!

Updated- I forgot to post the classic lifting photos with my previous post so have added them 😊

20 weeks, 31kg!! That’s huge!
What’s new with Norma?
She is just starting to develop some beautiful adult fur, which is a much darker auburn colour than her puppy fur. Even her tail is changing colour!
Otherwise she is loving life, unfortunately loves chewing hair and beards which has gotten her into a bit of trouble (poor Axel is one of her favourites because of his beard 😬)
Bates is also still loving his new sister and truck rides- see the photo of his cute jowly face with his head out the window. Does anyone else’s dogs try to ‘catch the air’? 😂
