Weekend Emergency Service -

Our ER team is available all weekend, until Monday at 8am when the general practice team returns!

Overnight coverage is through on-call and telemedicine, with full coverage through the days with a DVM on site.

We are looking for volunteer DVM's anywhere in Ontario that are able to provide virtual care to communities affected by the wildfires. We have RVT's on site, and it would be for general wellness, vaccines and minor treatments only. While it is best to have DVM's on the ground, we are looking to utilize virtual care to supplement our team. If you're interested, please email [email protected]

Today at our field hospital, we saw first hand the dire need for care. Meet Mavis, a 16 week old puppy.

Mavis' owners are members of Matawa First Nations, who are all affected by the wildfires and helping evacuees. Mavis was attacked by a much larger dog and was quickly brought into us at Matawa Pets & People field hospital. We are a field hospital. We aren't set up for traumas, but, in Thunder Bay, nobody else could see her.

Mavis quickly became very ill, and needed oxygen, IV fluids, pain medication and more. Mavis needs an ICU for suspected internal bleeding and other serious injuries, and will likely require surgery over the next week.

When we called all over the area... there is nobody equipped. Nobody with 24 hour care, which she needs.

The closest place is either the GTA, Manitoba, or into the states.

Fortunately, Boreal Veterinary Hospital in Thunder Bay graciously allowed us to bring her in for diagnostic imaging and xrays. But, she's critical.

Our only option is to fly her to Southern Ontario. Which is what we're coordinating now, with the help of Critical Care specialists at King Animal Hospital.

The cost of everything will be at least $15,000, if not more. We've told the family that we will be doing everything to save this adorable puppy.

Our work in the North has led to us meeting and working with many people in the animal industry who are all looking to support this important cause. We at VAC are grateful for everyone who has come together to help.

However, working alongside each other during emergency response is not the same as an official partnership or endorsement.
It has come to our attention that there are posts circulating on social media making false claims of partnerships, endorsements, and official requests by VAC, including potential fundraising attempts.

Because of this, we would like to be clear: Any true partnerships or endorsements would be announced by us, on our social media and/or website. If it is not on our official pages, it has not been approved by us.

‼️ We urgently need DVMs and RVTs to join our wildfire response team. ‼️ Without more DVM's, our mission may be forced to end.

Our Veterinary Emergency Preparedness and Response team is on the ground in Northern Ontario, providing emergency veterinary care to animals affected by the wildfires and supporting communities as they begin to return home.

If you're able to volunteer, you will be:

-Field hospital staffing: general wellness care, medications, vaccines, microchipping, and minor urgent care. No X-ray or in-house labs, but we do have point-of-care ultrasound.

-Drive-in deployments to nearby communities, coordinated with MNR firefighters, local police, and First Nations leaders for safety.

-Fly-in deployments to remote communities.

-Possibility of surgical services, pending accreditation and equipment arriving.

-Can't commit to a full week? We can still use your help. Housing and meals are still provided for shorter deployments.

Every additional DVM and RVT allows us to help more animals and support more communities during this emergency response. This deployment has been described by our DVM and RVT volunteers as "The most impactful and meaningful mission of their career". If you're feeling stressed, burnt out, losing your love of the industry, missions where you're helping for the sake of helping will help restore your love of the job.
