A summertime PSA!
As we reach the months where many tourists are visiting the area, so too do we see a spike in canine illnesses. We want to get the word out early to prevent any of our furry friends from getting a summer bug! Here are a few reminders:
- The bordatella vaccine is much like the human flu vaccine - it can't catch every single strain! Even a vaccinated dog can get kennel cough or other upper respiratory illnesses due to the wide variety of strains. That's why we see an uptick often in summer, with more tourists visiting with their pups. That doesn't mean it's useless though! A vaccinated dog stands a much higher chance of avoiding such bugs.
- Avoid letting your pup drink from shared water sources such as public dog water bowls, especially during big events with lots of other dogs. Your dog may be vaccinated but other dogs may not!
- Please keep an eye out for excess sneezing or "reverse sneezing", coughing, or nasal/eye discharges. The pollen count is high this year, but if your pup is continuing to have these symptoms even if they're inside all day, you may want to book a vet visit.
- If you dog begins showing signs of an upper respiratory illness, we will need you to pick them up ASAP. A dedicated emergency contact who can facilitate this for you is a must have!
- Dog parks are a huge vector for these illnesses. If you do take your pup to the dog park, please let us know so we can be on the lookout for any symptoms; watch for symptoms at home as well.
We don't want to be party poopers. We want everyone to have fun this summer, human and dog alike! You know what they say about an ounce of prevention though. Please help us keep everyone safe, and be aware this summer!
