Hi folks. I was present for part of this groom today and I wanted to share Taylor’s post because of how important it is to take care of your dog AND your groomer/vet/anyone handling your dog. Please train your dog or seek help from a professional trainer. 🐾💕
One thing I pride myself on is my ability to work with difficult/dangerous dogs that others haven’t been able to work with, and I feel that comes from my background in training along with the many years of experience I have. Both certified and not. (Did you know I have over 13 years experience in a grooming salon??? Crazy right!?)
I also have the same amount of time behind me when it comes to training dogs. I was lucky enough to grow up in both a dog grooming house and a dog training house.
And the ability to read each dog and work with every individual dog and their own quirks that come across my table comes from that.
In all this time I have called off / stopped a groom a very small handful of times. Three in total. Today was number three.
Grooming and training go hand in hand without training the dog to accept the grooming process it’s going to be a very difficult, stressful and potentially dangerous time for the dog and the groomer. Especially if the dog is breed that needs regular grooming. It’s why we as groomers stress the importance of starting all puppies as soon as possible for grooming. But it doesn’t always happen.
No groomer wants to send a dog out unfinished or poorly done but sometimes that’s the reality of a dog that’s dangerous to work on.
The dog today was both a danger to himself and me and honestly it was heartbreaking knowing I couldn’t help that dog through the process today, to understand that although it needed to happen that nothing was going to happen to him. Do I think this dog had been hurt before? Absolutely not. Do I think this dog has simply learned that the level of behaviour he showed today got him out of situations? Yes I do.
We love every dog that comes in the door and we want every dog to be happy when they’re with us. We do this job for them and the love we have for them.
