Coyotes are active in our area, and encounters are becoming more common. Protect your pets and yourself with these essential safety tips from
🐾 Pick up small pets & children – Keep them close and out of reach. Keep your pets on a leash (non-retractable).
🚫 Never run or turn your back – This can trigger a chase response.
🙌 Be BIG and LOUD – Wave your arms, stomp your feet, and clap your hands. Surprise movements work best!
🗣 Yell “Go away!” – Use a strong, assertive voice (but don’t scream).
🚶 Slowly back away – Maintain eye contact and stay confident.
Take action! – Use aversion conditioning (humane hazing) techniques:
🔑 Shake car keys
☂️ Pop an umbrella or shake a large black garbage bag
🎾 Throw an object near the coyote (clumps of dirt, a shake can with coins)
📢 Use a loud, firm voice
Be aware of food attractants 🍔🚮—if you see leftover food or garbage, report it to Animal Control, Bylaw, or City Officials.
🌿 Be a responsible visitor! Always pack up all food waste, garbage, and dog f***s when enjoying the outdoors.
Stay alert, stay safe, and help spread awareness! 🐾
