The Emergency Department - What to expect. 🚑

Our Emergency Department is open 24/7. When you bring your pet to the emergency room, the first step is triage — a rapid medical assessment to determine how urgently your pet needs care.

Just like in human ERs, patients are seen based on the severity of their condition, not the order of arrival. Pets experiencing life-threatening issues (such as difficulty breathing, active seizures, collapse, severe trauma, or uncontrolled bleeding) are treated immediately. If your pet is stable, there may be a wait while our team focuses on critical cases.

In order to determine urgency of care, every pet will have vital signs taken, an initial triage examination performed, and brief history taken by a registered veterinary technician. This will allow us to provide a triage categorization.

After triage:
• A veterinarian will perform an exam when it is your pet’s turn to be evaluated
• We’ll discuss our findings, recommended diagnostics, treatment options, and expected costs before proceeding whenever possible

Emergency visits can feel overwhelming, but our team is here to guide you every step of the way. Caring for your pet safely and compassionately is always our top priority. ❤️ 🐾

🔬 Leptospirosis in Dogs: Key Facts 🐾

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira spp. bacteria. These organisms can survive in moist environments outside of a host, particularly in stagnant water and wet soil, and are shed in the urine of infected wildlife such as rodents, raccoons, and skunks.

Dogs can be exposed through mucous membrane contact or ingestion of contaminated water or soil. Once infected, Leptospira can spread through the bloodstream to target organs—most notably the kidneys and liver, leading to acute disease.

Common clinical signs include:
• Fever, lethargy, decreased appetite
• Vomiting, diarrhea
• Increased thirst/urination
• Jaundice
• Muscle pain or stiffness
• In severe cases: bleeding or respiratory distress

Why it’s important:
Leptospirosis is potentially life-threatening and zoonotic (transmissible to humans), making early recognition and veterinary care essential.

Prevention:
• Vaccination reduces clinical disease and shedding
• Minimize exposure to wildlife-contaminated environments
• Avoid allowing dogs to drink from standing water sources
