We are big on this here at Ashvale! We do not breed to sell….we breed to better the breed ❤️ we strive to breed cats that meet the breed standards and we show them in multiple associations! We are big believers of Quality over Quantity and showing helps stop us from being “cattery blind.” Each pairing is thoroughly thought out, keeping each parents strengths & weaknesses in mind. The hope is to create healthy & typey kittens!
“If your breeder doesn’t show, how are they actually being evaluated?
I’m not saying every single breeder has to be in the show hall every weekend, but at some point you have to ask… who is giving them real, unbiased feedback?
It’s easy to say your cats meet the standard. It’s easy to say they’re improving the breed. But based on what? Your own opinion? Your friends?
Showing puts your cats in front of multiple judges who don’t know you, don’t owe you anything, and will handle your cats and compare them against others. That’s where you learn. That’s where you get told what’s correct, what needs work, and what should or shouldn’t be bred forward.
Without that, you’re kind of breeding in a bubble.
And that’s how you end up with drift in a breed. Structure changes. Type gets lost. Temperament gets overlooked. Things start getting labeled as “normal” when they really aren’t.
Showing isn’t about ego. It’s about accountability, education, and actually proving what you’re producing.
So yes, it’s a fair question to ask your breeder. If a breeder isn’t showing or getting outside evaluation… how are they truly improving anything?”
