Why Some Dogs Hesitate at the Groomer

Some dogs run right through the door.
Some walk in slow.
And some hit the brakes like, “nope, not today.”

If your dog hesitates, it doesn’t mean anyone hurt them or that the groomer isn’t good to them. A lot of dogs just don’t love the process of grooming, even when the person doing it is gentle and patient.

Grooming comes with:

• New smells
• Loud sounds
• Being away from their person
• Standing still
• Dryers, clippers, brushing

It’s a lot of sensory stuff happening all at once, and some dogs are just more sensitive than others. Some had a stressful experience somewhere else. Some just don’t like the “walking through the door” moment, even though they settle once we get started.

Your dog doesn’t have to love grooming to be treated with love during grooming.
My job is to make the whole thing as calm, safe, and predictable as possible and that’s exactly what I focus on every day.

Crazy to think that over 400 dogs have come through our doors last year! 🤯We’ve recieved so many new clients this past year and first time grooms. We just want to take a moment to say thank you for entrusting us with your pets especially with their very first groomings! Including those who drive 1-2 hours one way just to see us! It’s so important to set the stage well during their first time grooms to ensure a successful future with their sessions, making it easier on both client and groomer to achieve a successful cut.

A successful cut it not necessarily a “perfect cut” but a session of which we achieve closest to the desired look you are after, SAFELY, to the best of our abilities!

As much as we try to make it a “spa” day. The truth is most dogs despise and hate getting their hair and nails trimmed. It’s overstimulating being constantly touched all over their body. Weird buzzing noises and sounds especially when nearing their ears and head. Legs and paws often dont like to be touched. Don’t even get me started on the blow dryer! 🤭 Taking time to get them use to all these sounds so that it doesn’t become a traumatizing experience is not only challenging but can be mentally exhausting for both dog and human. So getting your dog use to these things at the very beginning of their life time helps set the stage and success for many years to come.
