Our Shark Touchpool has welcomed a new friend!
This is Sofie, a Bluespotted Ribbontail Ray. In the wild, this species can be found in warm shallow waters of the West Pacific! Sofie came to us via private donation and is getting comfortable in her new digs!
She shares her home with 2 White Spotted Bamboo Sharks and 1 Short-tail Nurse Shark!
Since Sofie is so new, guests aren't able to interact with her via touch, yet, but her care team is hard at work helping her feel comfortable and giving her lots of her favorite food, scallops!
Come by Sea Life Caverns any day of the week and say "hello!" to Sofie.

Happy 41st Hatch Day to Doug, our wonderful African Penguin.
Doug came to Marine Life 40 years ago when she was just a year old!
Since then, she has been a wonderful ambassador for her species, helping countless guests discover just how intelligent and personable these penguins are.
In the wild, African Penguins live an average of 15 years, meaning Doug is one of the oldest African Penguins on the planet.
All of the African Penguins at Marine Life are part of an international, registered breeding program designed to protect the longevity of the species, which is critically endangered.

Big personality. Big appetite. Big lizard.
Happy National Iguana Awareness Day!

Iguanas are fascinating reptiles with plenty of quirks worth celebrating - from their impressive climbing skills to the little “third eye” on top of their heads!

But remember: exotic pets are a big commitment. Before bringing one home, make sure you understand their needs, lifespan, size, diet, and habitat requirements. The best way to love an animal is to be prepared to care for it for life.

Want to learn more? Come visit Sylvester in Sea Life Caverns to discover how charming these lizards can be!

Goldfish are great pets. But in Alberta’s lakes? Not so much.

This World Lake Day, we’re celebrating the incredible lakes, rivers, and aquatic life that make Alberta special — and reminding everyone to Don’t Let It Loose!

That little goldfish may look harmless, but releasing aquarium fish into the wild can cause big problems. Goldfish can survive in Alberta waterways, grow much larger than you might expect, and compete with native species for food and habitat.
So please: keep your goldfish at home, not in the lake.

Have a fish you can no longer care for? Don’t release it. Instead, find a responsible rehoming option.

Let’s keep Alberta’s lakes full of the wildlife that belongs there.
Cute in your aquarium. Not in our lakes. Don’t Let It Loose!

Happy World Conservation Day!

Today is a reminder that protecting our natural world starts with the choices we make every day. While global conservation efforts are essential, individual actions add up to create lasting change.

One simple way to make a difference is through citizen science—projects where people help scientists collect data about the world around them. A great example is the Nature Conservancy of Canada's Big Backyard BioBlitz, where you can record the plants, animals, insects, and fungi you observe to help researchers better understand and protect biodiversity.

Whether you join a BioBlitz, plant native species, reduce single-use plastics, or simply spend time learning about the wildlife in your own backyard, every action helps conserve the ecosystems we all depend on.

What action will you take for nature today?
